Crash
claims lives of two Versailles children; parents
flown to UC

Last Thursday, March 24, a horrific crash on
US 421 South of Versailles, claimed the lives
of two children, Kacy Nonoka Indiana Brown,
7, and her sister, Grace Nana Brown, 6.

An initial hearing was held for John R. Tunny,
47, of Batesville, last week in Ripley County
Circuit Court on four counts of Child Molesting.

Commissioners
approve designs

Garry Wright, LWC, an architect for the annex project,
presented the final schematics for the building
at the regular commissioner meeting on Monday, March
21. Wright utilized the comments and suggestions
made in both commissioner and building committee
meetings, as well as input from office holders,
to create an acceptable floor plan.
The schematics show a three-floor building with
a meeting room for commissioners or council meetings.
The third floor or attic space, will be utilized
for storage, with storage areas on the second floor.
Other changes to the design was made.

Council denies request

After a request was first tabled by the Ripley County
Council members, this month it was denied.
Clerk Mary Ann McCoy had asked for $10,600 to be
appropriated for scanning and filing in her office
at the February meeting. This was for work for the
circuit and superior courts that needs to be preserved,
according to McCoy.

council hears about dam problem

Water coming from Versailles Street onto a homeowner's
property wiping out his dam was the first order
of business at the Holton Town Board meeting held
March 10.
Town residents Gary and Jeff Wright presented their
concerns about a hole on Versailles Street and said
that unrestrained water is being dumped onto their
property, into their lake from both the railroad
and the highway as well as weeds and cornstalks
from the nearby neighbors field.

with the implementation of a middle school
area that was unanimously approved at the
regular school board meeting on Wednesday,
March 16.

was held at the regular school board
meeting on Monday, March 14. The public
hearing is required as per PL221 for
schools that are put on academic probation.

and firefighters put their lives on the line everyday.
April 2 will be no different when local police and
firemen take to the boxing ring at the Belterra
Casino Resort & Spa - with all proceeds from
the event going to help support the new regional
Childrens Advocacy Center that opened in September
2009 in Dillsboro.

Billman of Osgood stopped at the Osgood Food Mart
on Saturday, March 12 for coffee and a scratch-off
ticket. He quickly turned five-dollars into $130,000
when he revealed the winnings of his Hoosier Lottery
Scratch-off. He won a top prize on a Triple the
Money scratch-off ticket.

from a recent tour in Afghanistan and were gathered
at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for a memorial
service to remember their fallen brothers - 15 in

a good cause on April 15.
A concert and silent auction benefit will
be held for the family of Cole Dufrene thanks
to the generosity of the Osgood Area Kiwanis
Club. The club gave $250 for costs associated
with the concert and challenges others to
help with this cause.

Circus to Osgood for the fourth time!

to consider transfer requests

fund transfer request from clerk Mary Ann McCoy
was heard by the Ripley County Council at the regular
meeting on Wednesday, February 23. According to
McCoy, the transfer request of $5800 from clerical
to services and charges is part of the scanning
of files into a new system used by the courthouse.

on Tuesday, March 1 to teach residents how to take
action to prevent them from becoming victims of
identity theft, scams and frauds.

Representative Randy Frye (R) spoke at the Ripley
County Republican Women's meeting held on Monday,
February 28 at the Osgood Town Hall. He updated
the group on bills he has authored or supported,
steps that have been taken to improve economic development
for District 67 and discussed the walkout by Indiana
Democrats on February 22.

holds 61st annual meeting

The importance of farming was highlighted at
the Ripley County Soil & Water Conservation
Districts 61st annual meeting held February
22 at the Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School. The
meal was catered by Waynes Meats of Milan.
Keynote speaker Fred Whitford, Purdue Extension,
kept the crowd on the edge of their seats as
he demonstrated how things are seen in a different
light, depending on the person looking at it.

Public Library to be part of Evergreen system

The
Osgood Public Library will soon become a
part of the Evergreen system after a unanimous
approval from the board of managers at the
regular meeting on Tuesday, February 22
at the Milan branch.
According to OPL Director Vicki Butz, joining
with the Evergreen system will allow library
patrons access to other libraries within
the system across the state. Currently,
the libraries in Versailles and Batesville
are part of the system along with those
in Madison, North Vernon and Greensburg.

Osgood
receives $600,000 grant
|

The
town of Osgood has received a grant
from the Indiana Office of Community
and Rural Affairs for $600,000 to
be used for the wastewater project.
This was announced at the regular
town council meeting on Tuesday, February
15.
The board also approved the claim
from Umbaugh and Associates for $4900;
Commonwealth Engineers for $7,645.08;
town attorney Mary Ann Gay for $5,056.55;
Bingham McHale for $11,034.90. Bids
were awarded to Mitchell and Stark
for $23,750 and Holman Excavating
for $28,428.51.

last date for filing for for the Primary Election
was Friday, February 18. This was for seats on town
councils including Batesville, Milan, Versailles,
Napoleon and Sunman.

bring a buzz to Milan

Milan was buzzing with activity on Saturday, February
19 due to the 2011 Honeybee Fair held at the Milan
VFW and sponsored by the Southeastern Indiana Beekeepers
Association.
Those attending the fair had the opportunity to
receive first hand information about beekeeping,
landscaping for bees and creating products that
use honey or beeswax from vendors and special speakers
Kathleen Prough, Indiana DNR Chief Apiary Inspector,
and Roy Ballard, Hancock County Purdue University
Extension Educator.

Versailles man faces child molest
charge

Charges
of Child Molest, Class A Felony, have been filed
against Darryl E. Simpson of Versailles.
Court records indicate that the charge goes back
to October of 2010 when Versailles police officers,
Marshal Joe Mann and Deputy Marshal Lee Mathews
investigated an allegation of child molesting that
involved Simpson.
