The January meeting
of the Ripley County Council was
held Tuesday, January 19 instead
of their regularly scheduled date
of the third Monday of each month
due to Martin Luther King Jr.
Day.
At the meeting unanimous approval
was given for Dephane Smith to
continue as council president
with Donald Dunbar serving as
president pro-tem.

council makes appointments

Appointing
individuals to represent the town of Osgood
was the order of business for the first regular
Osgood Town Council meeting of 2010 on Tuesday,
January 19. Tammy Wilhoit was unanimously appointed
to the Southeastern Indiana Regional Planning
Commission board and Ed Newman was re-appointed
to the Ripley County Area Planning Commission.

School Board invites public input
State cuts to affect local
schools

Interim
Superintendent Steve Gookins addressed the
financial challenges facing Milan in the coming
year due to budget cuts by the state at the
regular board meeting on Monday, January 18.
According to Gookins, he is currently looking
into all operational costs to find ways to
reduce spending to accommodate these cuts.

Jac-Cen-Del School Board had the opportunity
to tour the Southeastern Career Center
in Versailles at their regular meeting
on Wednesday, January 20. According to
Superintendent Bill Narwold, the tour
will provide board members insight to
the changes that have been made in curriculum
and programs offered to their students.

Two Holton men
arrested after police discover active meth lab

Two
Holton men were arrested earlier this week after
police in Decatur County made a traffic stop
and discovered an active methamphetamine lab
inside the vehicle.
According to information from Sgt. Robert Duckworth
of the Decatur County Sheriffs Office,
the discovery was made after they received a
report of suspicious activity on west County
Road 1100 S. in Decatur County. Deputy Kevin
Rohr and Trooper Rick Love of the Indiana State
Police responded.

tabled at the December meeting, was considered
at the regular planning commission meeting
on Tuesday, January 5. The application
will include 20.1869 acres at property
near Elrod.

by the earthquake in Haiti last Tuesday, January
12 has been heard around the world and Ripley
County has joined those responding.

Arrest
warrant issued for Holton man after police find
working meth lab

The
Ripley County Circuit Court issued an arrest
warrant yesterday, January 11 for William Woody
Baker, 33, of Holton, for Manufacturing Methamphetamine,
a Class B felony.

Police
ask for any information regarding sexual assault
report

According to information from Sheriff Tom Grills
his office is investigating a report of a sexual
assault involving a 19-year-old female.
The alleged assault happened Saturday night,
January 9 near the Holton area, while the female
was traveling along Hopewell Road. The female
reported she had stopped to assist a stranded
motorist when she was assaulted by a white male.
He was operating a small, older black pickup
truck.

meeting of the South Ripley School Board it
was unanimously approved to change the date
of the January meeting from 18 to 11. This was
done to keep in compliance with Indiana law
requiring board reorganization by January 15.

of Second Lt. Amanda Thompson and the
732nd Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron
Facility Engineer Team 2 (FET 2) as well
as the American Legion Post #173 of Versailles.

Police Dept. to comply with interview procedures

At the December meeting of the Osgood Town Council,
Marshal John Hegge said the police department
will now be required to interview all felony
suspects by audio and video. He said this would
result in the need to purchase additional equipment
at an estimated cost of almost $15,000.

local soldier showed his appreciation to the
Milan American Legion after returning from Iraq
just days before Christmas.
Spc. Mark Toms presented a flag to Ron Mills,
commander of the Smith Ashcraft Kissell Post
#235 last week with past Ninth District Commander
Raymond Al Kerner Jr. and present
Ninth District Commander Alex F. Cook of Paoli,
in attendance. Kerner, of Sunman, is the present
District Nine Membership Chairman.

Cheatham
to seek re-election to Legislature
|
State
Representative Dave Cheatham announced
that he will seek re-election to the Legislature
in Indiana House District 69. Cheatham
is completing his sixth term in the General
Assembly, returning in 2006 to the position
he had previously held for eight years.
Because we are looking at challenging
times, we need to keep leaders with the
experience and commitment to fight for
their community to get the resources and
opportunities to make the future better,
Cheatham said.
