The Jac-Cen-Del School Board had the opportunity to tour the Southeastern Career Center in Versailles at their regular meeting on Wednesday, January 20. According to Superintendent Bill Narwold, the tour will provide board members insight to the changes that have been made in curriculum and programs offered to their students.

No longer a school for those students who cannot perform academically, SCC offers several programs that use advanced math and technical skills. In the future, upper level Project Lead the Way courses will be taught at SCC.

In his report to the board, JCDHS Principal Johnny Budd explained that there is a lot of community involvement working to help students discover options available to them as they prepare for their futures.
Project-based learning is being investigated as an enhancement to the current curriculum. This is a hands-on learning concept that combines two subject areas, according to Budd. Presently there are only six schools in Indiana that strictly use this program.

Budd also reported that several teachers will attend the Math Matters workshops. These workshops are sponsored by Indiana University and support math in real-life situations.

Superintendent Narwold recognized elementary principal Leanna Phillippe and high school principal Johnny Budd as they work toward their superintendent licenses. As mentor for both Budd and Phillippe, Superintendent Narwold received a letter from their instructor praising them for their hard work. He also noted that as part of their training, each will conduct the February and March meetings.

In personnel, the resignation of Dance Team Coach Dana Weber was unanimously accepted by the board. The recommendation to approve Carrie McNew as dance team coach was unanimously approved.
In other business:

• The January I Caught You award was given to sixth grade teacher Deanna Budd for her Santa letter writing project with Cowan Elementary. She was nominated by fellow teacher Travis Rohrig.

• An audit of the elementary cafeteria by the Indiana Department of Education found it to be in compliance with state regulations for providing good, nutritious food.

• The Sidewalks to School project has been approved and is slated to start in the fall with matching funds provided by the Reynolds Foundation. The sidewalks will go from the school to State Road 350.

• According to Superintendent Narwold, three board members terms will expire this year. Those interested in running for the JCD School Board can pick up a form at the superintendent’s office.

All board members were in attendance with the exception of Deanna Young. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 17 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the elementary library.
