calendar discussed at SCC board meeting
|
Beth
Rumsey
Staff Writer
The
Southeastern Career Center Board of
Managers discussed the 2011-2012 school
calendar at the regular meeting held
Wednesday, October 15. According to
SCC Director Brad Street, the SCC
calendar needs to correspond with
each school if possible in order to
maximize study time and reduce the
number of days where only one or two
schools attend.
During the discussion the board learned
about a balanced calendar where a
school will have three semesters with
a two-week break in between. Southwestern
School Corporation has plans to institute
the balanced calendar for next year
with several other schools discussing
the option.

Duncan receives Sagamore of the Wabash award from
Gov. Daniels
|
Governor Mitch Daniels surprised
Representative Cleo Duncan recently when he honored
her with the Sagamore of the Wabash Award for
her 16 years of service to the Indiana General
Assembly.
I scheduled a meeting with the governor
to say farewell and to give thanks for everything
he has done for me and for our state over the
years, said Rep. Duncan. So, needless
to say, I was genuinely surprised and much honored
to receive such a prestigious award.

|
Wanda

As
the weather remains summer-like with temperatures
in the upper 80s, its hard
to think about Christmas. However, thats
exactly what a local group has on their minds
according to Shanna Joseph, who is heading
up the Ripley County Angels of Giving for
another year.
The economy could have left hundreds of families
without food and presents for their children
last year at Christmastime if it had not been
for the generous giving of businesses, organizations,
and individuals in Ripley County.

Honeybees
cause quite a buzz
|
Beth
Rumsey
Staff Writer
What Milan homeowners Tony and Teresa
Veldhaus discovered in their chimney this
fall will benefit farmers and gardeners
in the spring. Veldhaus discovered a colony
of about 12,000 honeybees after seeing
a few dead bees at the base of the chimney,
the second colony to build a hive there
in three years.
Knowing that honeybees are scarce, Veldhaus
contacted local beekeeper Jim Orem to
remove and relocate the colony. Homeowners
like the Veldhaus who would take
the time to relocate a colony are few,
said Orem.
