Healthy Insights: A look into Alzheimer's Disease and dementia
New health section in today’s newspaper
Alzheimer’s is not just memory loss, Alzheimer’s kills. It is the sixth leading cause of death in America, and the fifth leading cause of death for those age 65 and over. Deaths from it increased 71 percent from 2000 to 2013. Our Healthy Insights special section in today’s paper deals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Every other month we will tackle a different health topic. Contributing writer Suzzi Romines attended a two-day workshop in Milan in October that addressed what families need to know, legal issues, the progression of the disease, and coping strategies. Between the workshop and further research, she has put together an overview of the disease noting the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Alzheimer’s can take a devastating toll not just on those with it, but also on their caregivers. With that in mind, Romines interviewed a Versailles woman who cared for her ailing mother with dementia. Sally Morris feels blessed she could care for the woman who helped her so many times in her own life. She also shares her insight so other caregivers will not feel alone. We also have included information about important legal documents, local support groups and tips on dealing with those with the disease during the holidays.
