Mildred I. Thomas
Mildred Irene McClure Thomas, age 98, of Madison, entered this life on December 5, 1918 in Ripley County in the town of Holton. She was the loving daughter of the late Joseph Everett and Jessie Mae Myers McClure.
She was raised in Holton and was a 1936 graduate of Holton High School where she played basketball. On June 29, 1940 she was united in marriage to Willard J. “Bud” Thomas in Madison. This happy union of nearly 38 years was blessed with sons, James and Roger and a daughter, Marla. Mildred worked early in life as a home health care worker and later at the Madison State Hospital working in the cafeteria. She then began volunteering at the E.O. Muncie Elementary School and soon was hired as Red Anderson’s secretary. She then served as secretary/treasurer for the Madison Consolidated Schools until she retired on August 31, 1983.
Mildred was a faithful member of the North Madison Christian Church since 1936 and was the oldest consecutive member at the time of her death. She had served in many capacities in her church including, Sunday school teacher, Bible studies, camp, and women’s council. She also attended the Homemaker’s Club and the Kent Christian Widow’s Group. She was an awesome cook, enjoyed sewing, excellent gardener, found enjoyment in flowers and watching the birds. Mildred was a kind, considerate Christian who brightened anyone’s day that was blessed to meet her. Mildred died on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at 11:20 a.m. at the Thornton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover.
Survivors include her son, James Thomas (Valeria) of Madison; daughter, Marla Thomas of New Albany; grandchildren, Blythe Couch, J. Blake Thomas (Sarah), Jeffrey Jason Thomas (Chrissy), Scott Thomas and Bryan Thomas; great grandchildren, Karson Couch, Rachel Couch, Grant Thomas, Bri Thomas, Gabe Thomas, Cadence Thomas, Garrett Thomas, Alana Thomas, Braelyn Thomas; niece and nephews, Amy O’Leary, Mike, Patrick, and Leland McClure; several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Everett McClure, died 1960; her mother, Jessie Mae Myers McClure, died 1971; her husband of 38 years, Willard J. “Bud” Thomas, died March 13, 1978; her son, Roger Dale Thomas, died February 22, 2001; her grandson, Brandon Lane Thomas, died September 22, 1977; and her brother, Grover McClure and his wife, Muriel.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m., by Bro. Bob Hicks at the North Madison Christian Church, 1400 East State Road 62 in Madison, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Marble Corner Cemetery in Versailles. Friends may call Friday from 5-7 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive Madison, and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
