Taking a shot at state as a freshman and sophomore, with high expectations in coming years

Kayla Truesdell, a junior at Jennings Co. High School, is working hard to be the best she can be in Discus and Shot Put events. In doing so, even as a freshman, she earned a bid at State Competition Level in Girls Track & Field in Field events of Shot Put and Discus, returning as a sophomore this past season, with even greater expectations up her sleeve for her junior, senior and college years to come.

In her very first Meet in high school competition, as a freshman (at East Central High School), her distances were - Discus - 91'8" and Shot - 29'1.5" Her best Discus distance acquired over her freshman season was at HHC for 113'4.75" and Shot at 37'5" at the Regionals. She qualified for state competition as a freshman and was ranked 25th in state. At the state Meet, she threw 35'7" and placed 23rd overall. As a sophomore, Truesdell (standings) entered state competition ranked at 17th and added Discus - entering state at 11th. Her finish distance, after the 2017 state competition, were Shot - 39'4.75" for 16th and Discus - 125'7" for 10th in state. Truesdell broke the shot put record of 38' 6½" during the first meet of the 2017 season and continued to break her own record throughout the year finishing with a personal best of 40' 11 1/2".
Kayla was named all-conference for Sectional after placing first in Shot Put and honorable mention in Discus, after finishing second. She went on to place second in both Shot Put and Discus at Regionals in Bloomington, throwing a personal best in discus of 126' 6". Kayla participated in both shot put and discus at the IHSAA track and field state finals. She finished with a 10th place in Discus and 16th place in Shot Put. She also received several awards for the season including the Jennings County Track and Field Coaches Award and Big Cat Top Field Event Performer.
Kayla attended South Ripley Elementary School before moving to Jennings County with her mom, Julie Black Bultman, step-dad, Dennis Bultman, and sister, Kylie Truesdell. Kayla’s grandparents, Richard and Mary Black. are lifetime residents of Ripley County. Her dad and step-mom, Randy and Beth Truesdell, reside in Madison along with her grandparents, Dan and Carolyn Truesdell.
