The first annual Legionfest - A Taste of Versailles will be held July 29 from noon to 6 p.m. on the street south of the Legion (Water Street). Mark your calendars now for this feast of meats and more that will delight your taste buds and give to a great cause as well.
According to Roger Kavanaugh, member of the Versailles American Legion, the event will feature a “taste” of about any kind of meat you can think of. “We will be grillin’ ribs, brisket, pork tenderloin, have pulled pork, hot wings, corned beef, boston butt, gumbo, shrimp, and more,” he noted with a twinkle in his eye. Kavanaugh knows his way around a grill and has participated in the amateur division of Ribberfest many times. He also has a host of friends he has called on to come help man the grills and focus on their speciality. There’s even smoked macaroni and cheese!
Most of the grill cooks that day will be legionnaires and Sheriff Jeff Cumberworth will change hats to join them. He donated a large amount of ribs for the event and will also be there to grill them for hungry customers.
Kavanaugh says each “taste” which will be a nice portion will only cost $2 and a kids menu, again for just $2 will be available. Water Street will be closed off by the legion and smoke will be rolling from the grills. You can sit outside or go inside the legion to catch some cool air if it’s hot that day.
Proceeds from the event will be put into a culinary scholarship for a student, according to Kavanaugh. “Everyone is welcome to come and try a “taste” of what Versailles has to offer,” he concluded.

“Today was a great example of community members and business leaders coming together to improve the city,” Messer said.
“It was inspiring to be among so many Hoosier volunteers willing to donate their time and talents, and I thank Hillenbrand for their leadership. I hope the students and teachers at Batesville High School enjoy the improvements.” Prior to the volunteer event, Messer met with Hillenbrand executives to discuss local workforce needs.
“Hillenbrand’s One Campaign efforts contribute to strong communities and deep employee pride. We appreciated the Congressman volunteering alongside our employees and civic leaders today,” said Joe Raver, President & CEO, Hillenbrand.
Community leaders including Mayor Mike Bettice, Superintendent Paul Ketcham and State Rep. Cindy Ziemke also joined Rep Messer, Hillenbrand and Batesville Casket Associates for today’s “One Campaign” volunteer event.
