Beautiful weather, clear waterways and a nice crowd made for a great July 1 and 2 weekend for the annual 67th Madison Regatta Governor’s Cup Event. Only four boats were invited for the 2017 event, but they certainly put on a exciting, competitive show.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb was on hand Sunday July 2 to make the presentation of the coveted Governor’s Cup to 67th Annual Madison Regatta hard-battling, champion Andrew Tate. Tate is the first in the history of the Madison Regatta to earn the Governor’s Cup, as a son of a former Cup winner, that being his father who earned the honored victory in 1995 and 1996.
Regatta fans obviously got that as heat after heat hometown favorite Jimmy Shane performed to expectation to win, as the countdown to the main event would be ran. However, in the Governor’s Cup final run, 27-year-old Andrew Tate slipped past Shane to etch his name on the Governor’s Cup.
In doing so, Tate and his father established an historical earmark to be the first father and son to claim the honor during Madison Regatta racing history. Father Mark Tate was the Cup Champion in 1996 and 1997; now Andrew some 20 years later in the 2017 running rises to that honor as well.
