RS Shiners, SR Raiders knotted at 9-1 in 2017 ORVC baseball battle

Rolling along at 9-0 in the Ohio River Valley Varsity Baseball Conference Championship race of 2017 found South Ripley Head Coach Steve Franklin’s Raiders finally absorbing a loss to the hosting Rising Sun Shiners on Monday evening, May 15, by a final count of 1-4. The early season face off at South Ripley High School found SR the dominant team, giving the Shiners their only loss to date, before this game. With the target squarely on their backs since their earlier defeat of the Shiners, the race has continued to be heated, with no one else able to defeat either SR nor Rising Sun to this point in the season. The test from here out, with very few games remaining for both squads, is if any ORVC team that is left to compete against either of these teams can topple one of them to develop an outright 2017 ORVC Baseball Championship or will it end in a shared title. That test should promote great enthusiasm behind each team from their fan base as they battle toward Sectional and possible extended season action.
Turner pitches for RS
In the Rising Sun vs South Ripley battle, Shiner Brent Turner delivered from the mound for the hosts, while SR sent Luke Welch to the mound for the Raiders. Shiner Turner’s pitching stats for the 6-1/2 innings played found him charged with but one run on five hits. Welch/Walker Pitch
for South Ripley Just 3-2/3 innings into the game, Raider Welch had given up four runs on four hits and an error, putting SR in catch up mode for the remainder of the 6 1/2 inning contest. Welch pitched 65 pitches to the 19 batters he faced while allowing 4 earned runs, walked two batters and fanned four.
Walker to the mound, a little too late for SR
In relief, Raider Cory Walker took over the mound and the game, facing eight batters and throwing 32 pitches over his 2-1/3 innings walking two Shiners, and cutting down four on strike outs. South Ripley is IHSAA Class 2A, while the Rising Sun Shiners are IHSAA deemed Class 1A; therefore, no chance of another…third meeting between the two teams for a rubber match.
South Ripley, as IHSAA Class 2A, will compete in the Austin High School hosted Sectional #45, while the Rising Sun Shiners as IHSAA Class 1A will compete at the Madison Shawe High School hosted Sectional #60.
