275 competitors
Dancers compete in first contest at Milan
On February 21. the Milan High School was flooded with nearly 1,000 visitors. Why you may ask? They came to see 275 amazing dancers perform and compete against each other in an all-day event. Dancers competed with solos, duets, trios, and in teams ranging from four to over 16 dancers with age levels ranging from below kindergarten through 12th grade. The competition was co-hosted by the community team the Milan Indianettes and Batesville High School Dance Team. Coaches Tracey Gobel of Milan Indianettes and Denette Callahan of Batesville Dance Team worked for a year to prepare this competition.

The Milan Indianettes co-hosted a dance competition last month with over 275 dancers. The local group earned a first place in hip-hop, and third place in both pom and jazz.
The Milan Indianettes competed with three team routines and three solos. The three soloists: Amanda Garner, sophomore, received a High Superior rating; Melody Thomas, sophomore, received a Superior rating; and Tora Coleman, grade seven, received a High Superior rating. The team also did spectacular in their three routines: jazz, pom and hip-hop. In jazz, they earned a Superior and 3rd place, in pom they earned a High Superior and 3rd place, and in hip-hop they earned an Ultimate Star and first place. The team also scored high enough to earn a high point award.
The Batesville Dance Team competed with two team routines, a solo, and duet. The duet was performed by Whitney Drew, a freshman, and Berto Davalos, a freshman. They had a fantastic routine and scored a High Superior. Shelby Drew, a senior, performed beautifully and received a Superior rating. The team competed in Kick and Hip-Hop. In kick they earned a High Superior and 1st place. In hip-hop they earned a High Superior and third place.
All competing teams including the Milan Indianettes, Batesville Dance Team, Love to Dance Studio, East Central Dancers, Showtime, Three Rivers, Shooting Star, Dixonettes, Northwest Productions, Off the Edge, and the Lawrenceburg Tigerettes performed very well. Congratulations to all the dancers, coaches, parents, and volunteers who helped produce an impressive dance competition. The Milan Indianettes and Batesville Dance Team also offered a discount to anyone who brought in canned goods. Both the Indianettes and Batesville brought four boxes of canned goods for their local food pantries.

Sheriff scholarships announced
Ripley Co. Sheriff Jeff Cumberworth announced that Indiana Sheriff’s Association would again be awarding college scholarships to qualified high school seniors or college students who are pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Dearborn County Hospital accepting scholarship applications
The Dearborn County Hospital Foundation is now accepting applications for its High School Senior Scholarship Program for the 2016-2017 school year. Scholarships of $500 each are presented by the DCH Foundation High School Senior Scholarship Program to area seniors who will be pursuing healthcare careers after graduation.
