James Virgil “Smiley” Lotshaw
Let Us Pause To Honor the Memory of Mr. James Virgil “Smiley” Lotshaw. Mr. James Virgil “Smiley” Lotshaw, age 73, of Versailles, Indiana, entered this life on March 28, 1943, in Ripley County, Indiana.
Smiley, as he was known all around Ripley County, was the loving son of the late Virgil and Francis Burnett Lotshaw. He resided all of his life in Ripley County and was raised near Cross Plains where he attended school. Early in his life he was a caregiver to his grandparents. In 1965, he began employment with the Town of Versailles and worked with the street department. He could often be seen with “Smiley’s Express.” He retired after 43 years of service to the Town of Versailles. He moved to Colonial Manor 20 years ago and enjoyed delivering the mail to the residents of Colonial Manor. He enjoyed getting the tables ready in the recreation room for the evening card games. Smiley loved working jigsaw puzzles, feeding the birds, reading his bird book, riding his bicycle, reading his Bible daily, watching the Cincinnati Reds and South Ripley Raiders, multiple daily trips to McDonalds, visiting all his friends at the Versailles American Legion, vacationing in Pigeon Forge, watching old movies, and loved John Deere memorabilia, and family reunions. He was a faithful member of the Versailles Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir, the Men’s Brotherhood and Bible study. He also was a member of the Versailles Lions Club and loved to help with all club functions. Smiley enjoyed attending all the local festivals, ice cream socials and church socials. His motto was “I figure being a good neighbor is the only way to be. We’re here to help people.” Jimmy died on Friday, May 6, 2016, at 12:00 Noon at his home in Versailles.
Smiley will be missed by his loving cousins and caregivers, Joyce and Standley Taylor of Versailles; his close cousins, Mark Taylor and his wife, Lisa, Ken Taylor and his wife, Andrea; his special cousins that he called his girls, Bridgitte and Brianne Taylor; numerous cousins in the families of the Dixons, Gilpins, and Lotshaws. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Lotshaw in 1983, his mother, Francis Burnett Lotshaw in 1977, and his brother, Dale Fremond Lotshaw, died November 16, 2013.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 11 a.m., by Pastor Mike Cantrell at the Versailles Baptist Church, 228 South Washington Street in Versailles. Interment will follow in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 – 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Versailles Baptist Church, 228 South Washington Street in Versailles. Visitation is at the church.
The Versailles Lions Club will honor Smiley with a memorial ceremony on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at the Versailles Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Versailles Baptist Church Choir Fund. Cards are available at the funeral home and the church.
Lynn Robert Whisman
Lynn Robert Whisman, 87, died at home April 2, 2016. He was born February 9, 1929, in Osgood, to Robert and Nora (Russell) Whisman.
He earned a B.S. in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University in 1950. He married Carley Johnson in Cincinnati, on December 26, 1953. In 1960, Lynn and Carley moved their family to Tulsa. Lynn’s work in aerospace took him all over the world; his curiosity and open-mindedness made him a great traveler, and he and Carley loved their adventures.
Lynn was predeceased by his son, John Robert “J.B.” Whisman in 1997. He is survived by sister, Reva (Whisman) Everage, of Milan, Indiana; daughter, Vera Lynn Whisman, her partner Shari Woodard and their son Avery Whisman-Woodard, all of Geneva, New York; daughter, Dona Whisman Rozell, her husband Bud Rozell, of Dallas, Texas; and beloved wife, Carley (Johnson) Whisman, of Tulsa. A memorial service was held Wednesday, April 6 at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church.
Malcolm Neil Deputy
Malcolm Neil Deputy, age 79, of Sunman, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Vitas Hospice in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born January 10, 1937, in Seymour, but raised in Deputy, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Lois (Foster) Deputy. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Church on the Rock Assembly of God with Pastor Roger Dean officiating. Memorials are suggested to Church on the Rock Assembly of God.
William Douglas “Bill” Arthur
William Douglas “Bill” Arthur, 75, of North Vernon, passed away at 3:38 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at his residence. Born October 12, 1940 in Lamb, Indiana, he was the son of Charles and Roberta “Bo” Breeck Ingram. He married Lois Jean Benham on June 30, 1965 in Ripley County, and she survives.
The graveside service for Mr. Arthur will be held at the Vernon Cemetery at 12 Noon on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 with Rev. Dale Boyd officiating. Glenn C. Van Guilder
Glenn C. Van Guilder, age 77, of Greensburg, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2016, at Aspen Place in Greensburg. Born February 3, 1939, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Glenn R. and Helen (Sackett) Van Guilder. Private graveside services will be held at Rossburg Cemetery.
