SR Raiders find the light in 3-2 victory over RS Shiners

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

On Wednesday, April 22, what had become the making of a long season for the South Ripley Raiders Varsity Baseball Team found promising light during their battle at the Forest Waters Field at SRHS with a first victory of the year over the visiting Rising Sun Shiners, 3-2. It didn’t come easy, but the battling Raiders gained control to close the deal that had eluded them in their season endeavors.

Sophomore Raider hurler Corey Walker opened the game for SR at the mound, later giving way to freshman Avery Halcomb who delivered the clinching pitches to acquire the victory with solid fielding around him. Time and again, the Shiners pressed their luck at stealing, but the Raiders held them accountable one by one, picking them off one by one. Windy would be putting it mildly as there was a bit of a sting in the air, but with the victory recorded in the scorebook, all seemed much calmer for the SR home fans. Unable to close out many of their earlier games this season, it was a feel-good moment for the Raiders who would only have the evening to bask in their victory, as Coach Franklin reminded them “tomorrow it’s back to work.”
