Barbara Lue Bruce
Barbara Lue Bruce, 71, passed away Monday night, November 16, 2015, at her home with her family by her side. Barbara was born on June 30, 1944 in Bethesda, KY to Jesse and Iralue (Percy) Atkinson. She graduated from Dillsboro High School in 1962 and later married Elbert Bruce.
Barbara was blessed with four children and two stepchildren. Barbara worked at Dillsboro IGA for 15 years and at US Bank for nine years. She loved baking and crocheting, also creative writing, and enjoyed all Christian music. Barbara was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship. She enjoyed her friends in the Red Hat Society, loved dominos and canasta, and volunteered at the Lawrenceburg Library.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Elbert Bruce; two sons, Charles Edward (wife Darla) McIntosh of Pensacola, FL, Tracy Leroy (wife Heather) McIntosh of Greenwood; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Pepple (husband Rick) of Dillsboro, and Angela Denise (husband Steve) Hooten of WestPort; one stepson, William Bruce of TN; one stepdaughter Christy Bruce of TN; 16 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Jesse Samuel Atkinson, Dennis Earl Atkinson, and Michael Eugene Atkinson; and one sister Leatha MaeTudor.
Funeral services for Barbara will be Saturday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m. at Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship with Pastor Sherman Hughes officiating. She will be laid to rest at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro. Friends may meet her family Friday, Nov. 20 from 5-8 p.m. at the DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Memorials in her memory may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Parkinson Foundation. DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro, is in charge of arrangements.
Dawn Lori Johnson Reed
Dawn Lori Johnson Reed, 44, Madison, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015, at Indianapolis. She was born September 25, 1971 in Madison, the daughter of Carolyn Johnson. She married her husband of 23 years, Gregory Paul Reed of Madison on July 20, 1992 in Carrollton, Kentucky, and he survives.
Other survivors include: two daughters, Anja Lee Reed and her companion, Chris Champ of Indianapolis, Angel Anna Reed of Madison; her mother, Caroyln Johnson of Madison; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carol Gammons and her husband, Noel of Lexington; Kevin Dale Reed and his wife, Rebecca of Bear Branch, Catherine West of Orlando, Florida, Melissa Hatchell and her husband, Jerry Wayne of Hanover; mother-in-law, Minnie Joyce Reed of Carrollton, Kentucky; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her aunt, Nancy Todd.
Dawn was a 1990 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School and was a member of the Christ Temple Apostolic Church in downtown Madison. She enjoyed participating in the Brownies and in the Girls Club. Dawn had worked with U.S. Shoe Corporation, the Waters of Clifty Falls and the Dollar General Store. Dawn enjoyed watching the Kentucky Wildcats and the Dallas Cowboys, listening to music, reading, movies and games.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Nov. 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, with Pastor Frank McGee officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens, near Madison. Joseph Francis “Joe” Hammond
Joseph Francis “Joe” Hammond, 53, Madison, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Community Hospital North, Indianapolis. He was born on October 21, 1962 at Madison, the son of Curtis Hammond and Shirley F. Upp Hammond.
Survivors include his daughters, Courtney Elizabeth Carraco and her husband, Bryan of Henryville, Caitlyn Jo Hammond of Madison; grandson, Brody Allen Carraco; mother, Shirley Hammond of Madison; stepdaughters, Ashley McCauley of Terre Haute and Sarah McCauley of Versailles; stepgrandchildren, Brentley and Lilly; brothers, James Hammond of Madison, John Hammond and his wife, Lora of Salem; nieces and nephew, Deron, Audrey, Velvett and Ashly; aunts and uncles, Miriam and Marvin Griffith of Rotunda, Florida, Don and Ruth Upp of Atlanta, Georgia; and several cousins and other relatives. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Hammond, who died May 25, 2006; his paternal grandparents, Peter and Mary Hammond, his maternal grandparents, Joe and Myrtle Upp.
Joe resided in Madison most all of his life and was a 1981 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School. He attended Ivy Tech which helped him develop his skills as a mechanic. He then received an associate degree in computer technology from DeVry University. Joe began his working career as a mechanic at Demaree Motors and as a parts manager at the former Cas Casteel Chevrolet. He worked in computer technology at Reliance Rockwell and American Steel Cord. Joe decided to change careers and began working at Rescue 69 in Versailles and received his EMT certification at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville and Advanced EMT certification through King’s Daughters’ Hospital in Madison. He also served as an EMT with King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Stat Ambulance, Rural Metro and for Switzerland, Clark and Scott Counties. Joe was a faithful member of Wirt Baptist Church serving as a pianist and a deacon. He enjoyed music, playing the piano, the guitar, reading, sports, farming, mowing, trap and skeet shooting, Corvettes, and reading the Bible. Joe fought a courageous battle with cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Joe will be remembered for his dedication to hard work, friendship and for his commitment to family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Wirt Baptist Church, 4773 North 350 West near Madison, with Pastor Troy Hedges officiating. Burial will be in the Dupont Cemetery in Dupont. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 19 from 4-8 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, and Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
