John Halford
John A. Halford, 73, of Olean passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at his home. He was born in Tetbury Gloustershire, England, on April 22, 1941, the son of Andrew McIver Halford and Helen Saunders Halford. He was married to Patricia Curran in Glendale, California on June 11, 1966 and she survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Rebecca (Rick) Brown, and Judy (Chris) Hoban, both of Columbus, Ohio; six grandchildren; his father-in-law, Freeman Curran of Olean; three sisters, Margaret Halford of Berthoud, Colorado, Geraldine (Chris) Bayley of Wales, and Gaye (Ross) Beath of Australia; one brother Phillip (Linda) Halford of Hertfordshire, England. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother Robert Halford.
Mr. Halford received his BA degree in theology from Ambassador University in Pasadena, California in 1966. From 1966 to 2014 he was a minister for Grace Communion International, pastoring churches in Australia and Asia. He also served as their Regional Director in Europe and was editor of the Christian Odyssey Magazine. John was a member of the Christ International Church in Cincinnati, the Versailles Lions Club, and the South Ripley Ministerial Association. In his past time, he enjoyed building model trains.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Rick Shallenberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church. The Versailles Lions Club will conduct memorial services Friday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the CFC-Haiti, St. Paul Cemetery, or the Versailles Lions Club in care of the funeral home.
Wilma Joyce Reich Hoffman
Wilma Joyce Reich Hoffman, 83, a 42-year resident of Edgewater, MD, died October 3, 2014 at her home following a nine year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born on November 7, 1930 in St. Louis, MO, Joyce graduated from Mehlville High School in St. Louis in 1948 and attended the University of Houston.
In 1951, Joyce became a Navy officer’s wife and traveled extensively. During her husband’s career, Joyce served as president of the Officer’s Wives Club, coordinated numerous charity programs at several duty stations and supported wives and families of helicopter pilots serving during the Vietnam conflict. She and her husband sponsored numerous midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy. Joyce also worked in various secretarial positions for companies including Safeway and Kelly Girls, and retired as the office manager for Dr. Roger Harris. Joyce participated in Sunday School and Bible studies and was a choir member at Trinity United Methodist Church in Annapolis. She excelled at every undertaking and loved to knit, sew and garden. She also enjoyed water aerobics, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling with her women’s bowling league and volunteering at the Navy Dispensary
Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Reich, and her mother and stepfather, Marguerite and Shelton Doerksen. She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 63 years, CDR Merle L. Hoffman, USN (Ret.); one son, Merle L. Hoffman, Jr. (Alice) of Naples, FL; two daughters, Pamela L. Hoffman-Hanna (David) of Annapolis, MD and Sherrell L. Hoffman-Chaires of Ohio; four grandchildren, Merle L. Hoffman III (Sara), M. Brook Hanna-Fowler (Doug), Carolyn M. Hanna and Kyle B. Chaires; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held for Joyce at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1300 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity U.M. Church or the Hospice of the Chesapeake at www.hospicechesapeake.org.

Laverne Shanks
Laverne Shanks, 100, of Milan, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Ripley Crossing in Milan. Laverne was born Tuesday, September 8, 1914, in Osgood, the daughter of Morton and Annabel (Folsom) Caplinger. She married James F. Shanks on October 8, 1938 and he preceded her in death October 28, 2002.
Laverne was a homemaker and belonged to the Milan First Baptist Church and the Ladies Missionary Society of Church. Laverne enjoyed cooking, baking, and candy-making, embroidery, sewing, and playing bingo and also spending time with her family and friends.
Laverne is survived by her daughter, Verna (Bill) Voss of Santa Clause; sister: Shirley Rinkousky of Lake Village; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Laverne was preceded in death by her husband James Shanks, one son James Shanks, sisters: Mollie Garder, Lillian Thole, Helen Sullivan, Lenora Johnson, and brothers: Earl and Charlie Caplinger.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, October 25, at Milan First Baptist Church 112 South Main Street Milan, IN 47031 with Pastor Harris Long officiating. Burial will follow in Craven Cemetery. Visitation will also be Saturday from 12-2 p.m. at the church.

James T. “JT” Brofft
James T. “JT” Brofft, 64, of Montgomery, passed unexpectedly on Monday, October 20, 2014. Beloved husband of Dawn (nee Morokoff) Brofft.
Mr. Brofft was an U.S. Air Force Veteran and he most recently worked in the home improvement business, after careers in financial services and real estate. He was the brother of Linda (Michael) Italiano and Sherry (Gary) Guess. He was preceded in death by his parents Hoby and Marie Brofft and a son, David. Also survived by his beloved beagle, “Freddy Brofft”.
