Mattie Spurlock


Mattie Spurlock, 84, of Butlerville, passed away at 8:20 a.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2018, at her residence. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2018, at the Butlerville Mennonite Church with Rev. Dale Boyd officiating. Burial will be in Vernon Cemetery.

Born May 4, 1933, in Hazard, KY, Mattie was the daughter of George Marcum and Rebecca Marcum Shepherd Harris. She married MC Spurlock in London, KY, on March 19, 1949. He preceded her in death on August 23, 1998. She had worked in healthcare over 30 years and had been a member of Butlerville Mennonite Church over 65 years. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening, taking pictures, reading the Bible and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Mattie is survived by three daughters, Phoebe Findley and Matilda (Melissa) Spurlock all of Seymour, and Donna Garrett of North Vernon; three foster daughters, Anna Proffitt, Mable (Curt) Sharp and Sue Proffitt, all of North Vernon; 23 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Marcum and Rebecca Harris; her husband, MC Spurlock; four sons, Howard, Thomas, Silas Albert and Jonathon Spurlock; two daughters, Ida Mae Samson and Elizabeth Spurlock; three foster sons, Marvin, Therman and Johnny Proffitt; and a sister, Gladys Proffitt.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Our Hospice of Jennings County or Butlerville Mennonite Church. Chris L. Schuerman


Chris L. Schuerman, 62, of the Irvington community of Indianapolis, passed away Friday, January 12, 2018 at IU Med Center, Indianapolis, after an extended illness. Chris was born February 24, 1955. He was the only child of the late William George and Evelyn (Wagner) Schuerman, and grew up on the family farm in the Cross Plains community.

Chris graduated from South Ripley High School in 1973 and received a BA from the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University in 1978. He worked 33 years at Magnode Corporation as a machinist and forklift driver. His interests included history, gardening, and Purdue football. He was a member of the Irvington Garden Club and a willing volunteer in its activities. He loved his pug dog Sally, and the band Grateful Dead. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Lou Cooksey. His survivors include his fiancee Debbie Blume, many cousins in the Schuerman and Wagner families, and a host of lifelong friends from high school, college and work.

Services were held Friday, Jan. 19 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Indianapolis with burial in the Washington Park East Cemetery, also in Indianapolis. Serving the family was Oakley Hammond Funeral Home, Moore & Kirk Chapel of Indianapolis.


Hazel Honnert

Hazel Honnert, 83, of Milan, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 8 at All Saints Parish, St. Paul Campus in New Alsace (9788 N. Dearborn Road, Guilford, In. 47022). Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.
