Pictured left, construction began last week in Versailles. New culverts are being put in for the stormwater drainage system that will improve the run off water flow for the town. Watch for streets to be temporarily closed like this one on Tanglewood Road.
Storm Water Project
Ordinances for the Inflow and Infiltration, and stormwater project were presented at the July meeting of the Versailles Town Board by Attorney Larry Eaton. The first reading on these were heard with board members saying the stormwater project was getting underway. Watch for some streets to be temporarily closed as the construction crews get started.
Grants
Board members noted they have received a $10,000 grant from the Rising Sun Regional Foundation. “We are thankful,” noted president, Roxanne Meyer. She said they are always grateful for grant money that will make the town a better place to live. This money will go toward the soccer fields at the Sports Complex. The town has applied for a grant for picnic tables for Pangburn Park and discussed the possibility of getting a grant for a co-ed instructional program for the baseball program. A grant has been submitted for $180,000 to Community Crossings to get some roads paved. They are also discussing sidewalks in areas of the town that would make walking much safer.
Sports Complex
Matt McNew, board member, reported on the recreation sports at the Sports Complex noting that they have had a very successful year. Nineteen teams were slated to be at the complex on July 15. He noted that people coming into town love the complex, with the only complaint being they have no place to spend the night. Plans to have the same program in place for next year were discussed with McNew saying an attachment they purchased speeds up dragging the fields and things are getting in shape.
American Legion
Roger Kavanaugh with the Versailles American Legion, was given permission to close Water Street for the Legionfest “A Taste of Versailles” event slated for July 29 from noon to 6 p.m. He told the board members there would be about 15 grills of all sorts going with a “lot of cooking going on.” He noted it was similar to the Ribberfest in Madison, where he has cooked before. There will be a variety of meats and other food available with a menu specifically designed for the children. He noted that the proceeds from the event will go toward a culinary scholarship. The legion already gives out ten $500 scholarships.
Fire Department
Versailles Fire Chief Ben Sieverding was at the meeting reporting 38 calls his department responded to last month. He said he wanted to brag on the firefighters for saving a house on Clearview Lane. He reported an upcoming fire training with Indianapolis Fire Department coming to Versailles in August. Outdoor burning was discussed with members saying a fire pit or outdoor fireplace was possible, but no open burning. Sieverding said that fire pits need to be at least 30 feet from a structure from his standpoint.
Water Department
“Everything is going fine,” Kevin Hensley, maintenance supervisor, reported. He discussed some of the work they were doing on roads, taps, etc. He also mentioned flooding in some places in the town due to the torrential rains that have been in the area this summer. Hensley said having the dumpster last month for people to put additional trash in was a good idea and he’d like to see it again.
Town Marshal
Talking of cleaning up properties in the town, Marshal Joe Mann reported on some of the places he’s been attempting to get homeowners on board. A few have made headway, others are dragging their feet. There is an ordinance in place, and fines will be written. The town board encourages residents to get their places cleaned up. Marshal Mann noted that security cameras are installed at the ballparks. “We have long range cameras in various positions,” he reported. The technology is better now, so it’s easier to identify people caught on camera right down to minute details. He reported the money had been received from the flood at the firehouse and discussed equipment that was damaged that is now being replaced. A new car for the police department is expected in a couple of weeks. He noted the equipment is in and ready to be installed in the car.
Pangburn Park
A resident of Versailles, Joe Smith, was in attendance and asked about the big cement blocks near Pangburn Park. Hensley explained they were for the stormwater project that is soon to begin.
Next Meeting
All members of the board: Steve Mathes, Roxanne Meyer, and Matt McNew were in attendance with Kiersten Libby, clerk-treasurer taking the minutes. The next regular meeting of the Versailles Town Board will be held August 8 at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
