Ripley County will offer fireworks displays this weekend with Osgood, Versailles and Milan gearing up for their respective events to celebrate Independence Day.
The Ripley County Chamber will kick off their 17th Annual United We Stand event Friday, June 30 beginning at 5 p.m. where there will be fun for the whole family. Food booths, flea market, crafters and live entertainment with the Keith Swinney Band will be highlights of the evening leading up to the huge fireworks display that will light up the night sky. Bring your lawn chairs, kick back and enjoy the beautiful colors. There is still free booth space available if you’re interested in setting up on Friday night. Call the Chamber office at 812-689-6654.
Saturday night, there are two options.
Milan will be having fireworks at dusk at the Daren Baker Memorial Park, sponsored by the people and businesses of Milan. Also, the Versailles State Park will be having a fireworks display, at the pool area, that same night (at dusk) with free admission to the park during that time. The Milan Lions Club Fourth of July parade will be held on Tuesday, July 4 with parade entries lining up at the Milan High School as usual. This tradition is billed as the only Ripley County parade on the Fourth and is always a crowd pleaser. For information about registration call Jerry Smith at 812-654-3376. On the Fourth, Milan will also host a series of other annual events people have come to love and look forward to such as the Milan Methodist church’s breakfast and chicken dinner at the Milan Vol. Fire Department. The Milan Baptist Church will host their annual ice cream social on July 3 from 4-7 p.m. Milan will have three days of celebration for the upcoming holiday. You’re invited to attend one or all and bring the family.
When celebrating Independence Day at home, firemen and emergency workers urge people to use caution when lighting fireworks and dealing with gas grills.

“Mrs. Small-Summers is an outstanding educator who cares about student learning and makes science practical and fun!” Ryan Langferman, Milan High School principal said. “Most recently, she invited 4th and 5th grade students from Milan Elementary School to her classroom so that her chemistry and physics students could create and present a hands-on science lab for the students.”
In 2015, Indiana Academic All-Star Isabelle Ortt recognized Small-Summers as the educator who had most influenced her educational journey. Ortt expressed appreciation for Small-Summers’s compassionate personality and determination to fight for progress. “Mrs. Small-Summers has reminded me that ‘real’ academic success can be created anywhere, not simply at prestigious academies or in richly cultured cities,” Ortt said.
Jane Rogers, superintendent of Milan School Corporation, confirmed this and said, “Mrs. Small-Summers presents dynamic learning opportunities to ignite a passion in students. She is definitely deserving of recognition as a STEMstar in our area!”
In her spare time, Small-Summers enjoys hiking, camping and spending time with her family.
Genesis: Pathways to Success began the STEMstar program in January 2017 to recognize students and educators who are making strides in STEM. To nominate a STEMstar, please fill out the STEMstar form at http://bit.ly/STEMstar.
