Bonnie Smith
Bonnie Smith, 93, of Herrin, IL, formerly of Salem, died April 11, 2017 at home, in the care of her family. Born May 2, 1923 in the Flat Rock community near Osgood, she was the daughter of Lester R. and Daisy M. (Hull) Tucker who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Smith was a member of First Christian Church in Salem. She was active in the SAMS organization of the church, the Priscilla Bible Study Group, was a Bible teacher, and, minister’s wife helping her husband in the ministry. They spent 26 and half years planting new churches in Ohio, through NOAH, with Bonnie serving as financial secretary for NOAH. After moving to Herrin, she attended the First Christian Church of Herrin, ABF Adult Bible study, and Senior Saints Sunday School class. She was a 1941 graduate of Holton High School, and attended Cincinnati Bible and Business College. She was a faithful member of the Salem Township Hospital Auxiliary while living in Salem. She married James Edwin Smith, July 13, 1942 at the Dabney Baptist Church. He preceded her in death October 6, 2009.
Surviving are her children, Thomas (Margaret) Smith, of Rio Rancho, NM, Tim (Mickey) Smith, of Harrison, OH, Carol (John) Schlueter, of Northfield, OH, and Beth (Ron) Henwood, of Herrin. She is also survived by one brother Ray (Marian) Tucker of Dabney; one sister Joan (Norris) Krall of Osgood. Also, nine grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a brother Lee Tucker, and sisters Beulah Adams and husband Jack, and Hertha Jones.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, April 17 at First Christian Church in Salem, with minister Phil Martin officiating. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at Salem First Christian Church from 12 p.m. until the service hour on Monday. Memorials to her memory may be made to First Christian Church-Salem, First Christian Church-Herrin, the Lincoln Christian University, or Cincinnati Christian University Scholarship Funds and may be left with Rankin Funeral Home who is assisting the family with arrangements.
David J. Acre
David J. Acre, 65, of Friendship, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017 at his home. He was born at Milan on October 5, 1951, the son of Russell and Ora Roberts Acre.
Survivors include one daughter, Tammy Acre Bramel of Fairfield, Ohio; two grandchildren, Lexie and Tyler Bramel; two sisters, Erica Dennis of Harrison, Ohio and Pam Sandoze of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents Russell Acre and Ora Acre Alsop, and also his brother Charles Acre.
Mr. Acre was a 1969 graduate of South Ripley High School. David was a career mechanic having worked at the Ripley County Highway Garage and was a very familiar face in Friendship where he was employed at and retired from Whitey’s Auto Shop. David was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church and a former member of the Versailles Fire Department.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Sherman Hughes of the Bear Creek Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Akers Friendship Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Fire Department or the Friendship Fire Department in care of the funeral home.
Robert L. Nappier
Robert L. Nappier, 84, of Dillsboro, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017. Services for Robert Nappier will be at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Dillsboro American Legion.
