Southern Ripley County basketball fans have come to expect their final sports season battles between rival South Ripley Raider and Jac-Cen-Del Eagle teams, as determining the ORVC conference championship title. This year’s boys basketball season would be no different. On Friday evening, February 24, the South Ripley Raiders ventured to JCDHS for that final ORVC Conference game to determine a champion. Or not?

With a mere 8.8 seconds remaining SR up by 5 at 50-45, the heat of battle rages on
The Switzerland County Pacers had already acquired a 5-1 ORVC standing to earn at least a portion of the title, as they had defeated SR 50-30 in regular season action. However, the Milan Indians kept the gate open for South Ripley with their 62-61 OT victory over the SC Pacers leaving the JCD vs. SR battle to determine if SC was the sole title earner or if South Ripley would own a shared Title, and a third consecutive ORVC championship title, the very first time ever for an South Ripley Raiders Boys Basketball Team.
With JCD entering the game at 2-20, few expected or anticipated the battle that was about to unfurl in the Eagles Nest, unless you have followed the battling rivalries over the years to know not to count any one out until the final horn has sounded. Such would become the obvious, as a sullen reminder in this game, with the Raiders opening for first score following JCD’s failing to capitalize on their opening possession. However, rather than the expected runaway, Raider senior Walker was charged with two fouls in just over four minutes of action sending him to the sidelines and JCD production found them trailing by a single point, 10-11 at first quarter break. Even more unexpected, the Eagles took a one point 21-20 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.
At the end of the third period, JCD held solidly onto a one point edge at 35-34, leaving the final eight minutes to determine a winner. Over the final period, Raider McQueen fouled out and Luke Welch was knocked down and taken to the sideline with an injury. Eric Vickers replaced Welch in the Raider lineup, connecting on one of two FTs shot.
Proudly, players from both teams stepped up their games when called upon, with SR slipping away with a 50-45, five point victory and a shared ORVC Conference Championship Title, along with sole possession of the Ripley Publishing Company, Inc. Traveling Pride Trophy. For game stats read page 5 of the Osgood Journal. Pick up a copy at your local newsstand.
