Darrell Lee Bryant
Darrell Lee Bryant, 65, voted father of the year in 1982, has passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at his home in Bloomington, Indiana following a battle with cancer.
He leaves behind his daughter, Hillary; his son Phillip; son-in-law Buddy; brothers, Charles, Andy, Harold; and sisters, Betty and Glenda; grandchildren, Dallas, Drew, Audrey, Boston, Calisi, Heather, Jeania, and Steven; great grandchildren Taylar, Gabe, and Madison; and great grand baby, Juliette.
In his youth Darrell enjoyed playing in the hills of Kentucky and the town of Milan with his brothers, sisters and close friends.
Darrell graduated Milan High School in 1971. He was a varsity athlete playing football and running track. Darrell briefly attended Cumberland College studying to become a teacher before being drafted by the United States Army in 1972. He was promoted to the rank of Specialist and earned the National Defense Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal before he was Honorably discharged in 1974. Once moving to Bloomington to start a family he was hired at Westinghouse/ABB where he worked for over twenty years. Darrell later took a position at Indiana University and retired in 2016. Darrell loved his family, sports, trivia, sports trivia, vacations with his brother Harold, sunsets, and the Indiana Hoosiers! He will be forever missed. He enjoyed his life and was loved by his family and friends. People that talked with Darrell and shared his company will always remember their time with him. He was honest, kind, and most of all cared dearly about his family and friends. He made us feel proud and loved.

Dennis W. Hayes
Dennis W. Hayes, 75, of Benham, passed away at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the University Hospital in Louisville. He was born at Milan on October 25, 1942, the son of Wilkie and Jessie Niles Hayes. He was married to Barbara Linville on May 21, 1966 and she survives. Other survivors include one brother, Kenneth (Gladys) Hayes of Benham along with several nieces and nephews.
Growing up Denny attended the Benham School and was a 1960 graduate of Cross Plains High School. In 1962 he began working at the Aurora Casket Company and remained there his entire career retiring in 2005 after 43 years. Music was a major part of Denny and Barbara’s life and throughout their married life they did singing evangelical work which allowed them to travel to several states. Denny was a member of the Concord Wesleyan Church where served in several capacities.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 18 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Jerry Vandervort officiating. Burial was in the Benham Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Concord Wesleyan Church in care of the funeral home.
Lehmen French Combs
Lehmen French Combs, 91, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 16 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dillsboro with burial following in Oakdale Cemetery, Dillsboro. Ruth Hamilton, 97, of Versailles passed away Sunday. Services are pending at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
Coleen Shirley Crowell
Coleen Shirley Crowell, of Napoleon, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, December 15, 2017 with her family by her side. Shirley was born in Shingle Branch, Kentucky (Knott County) on January 4, 1941, the daughter of the late Arthur and Rachel (White) Collins. She moved to the Batesville area at the age of four.
Shirley attended the Batesville school system for 11 years and moved to Napoleon for her senior year and graduated from Napoleon High School in 1959. She met her husband Gene in her senior year of high school. Gene still refers to her as the prettiest girl in their class. She married Gene Crowell at St. John’s Lutheran Church on April 23, 1960 and her husband of 57 years still survives at home. They were blessed with three children; Tony, Tami and Tricia. Shirley was a homemaker and an excellent cook and thoroughly enjoyed her family. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy! Her heart was always full of love with an ear ready to listen and a hand willing to help others. She was a giving person who always put the needs of others before her own. She loved Christmas time, always making a big deal out of it for her family, from decorating, cooking and buying many presents. Perhaps it is only fitting that she received her greatest gift of all at this time of the year....being in heaven with her Lord! She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Along with Gene, those surviving who will cherish Shirley’s memory include her daughters, Tami Burress and her husband Don of Madison, Tricia O’Donovan and her husband Ryan of Cambridge, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Adam (Kasey) Burress, Derek (Andrea) Burress, Ashley (Shawn) Karle, Erica (Luke) Baumgartner, Rachel and Will O’Donovan, four great grandchildren, Karly and Sophie Burress, Jackson Karle, Chase Baumgartner and one brother, Algar Collins of Delaware, and many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Tony Crowell on April 27, 2001; three brothers, Elwood, Clarence and Mark Collins.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Napoleon. Burial followed at the church cemetery in Napoleon. The family has requested that memorials go to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in care of the funeral home. Services were entrusted to Neal’s Funeral Home. www.nealsfuneral home.net.
Donald Gilbert
Donald Gilbert, 77, of Moores Hill, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2017 at his home. He was born at Peppertown Ridge, Indiana on April 18, 1940, the son of Melvin and Hessie Mae Cornett Gilbert. He was married to Barbara on December 9, 1967 and she preceded him in death on January 3, 2017.
Survivors include one son Robert Copeland of Milan and one daughter Dawnell (Ralph) O’Neal of Osgood; four grandchildren Paul, Holly, Villette and Mary Kate also two sisters; Elva Hall of Leesburg, Florida and Deanie Roberts of Weirsdale, Florida. He was also preceded in death by his parents and four brothers; Orville, Walter, Lavon (Alex) and David; two sisters; Faye Williams and Emma Brown. Mr. Gilbert was retired from Elco Chemical in Cleves, Ohio.
His wishes were to be cremated and the family is planning a celebration of life memorial service at a later date. The Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles is honored to serve the family.

Eldon Curtis Gassert, Sr., age 79, of Canaan, died on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 17 at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison.
