Irene M. Barnhorst
Irene M. Barnhorst, age 99, of Batesville, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017, in Helena, Montana. Born October 29, 1917, in New Alsace, Indiana, she is the daughter of Catherine (Nee: Hoffbauer) and Louis Fritsch. She married Herman Barnhorst April 6, 1940, at St. Paul’s Church in New Alsace and he preceded her in death May 8, 2006.
A homemaker, Irene worked part time at the Napoleon Locker Plant for 20 years and was a member of St. Louis Church. Her family indicated that mom never met a stranger and that she loved having company and talking on the telephone. She was also a terrific cook and baker. They remember the smell of homemade bread frequently filling the house and will miss her fried chicken, corn, German potato salad and her homemade noodles. The church festival will miss her pies, cakes and coleslaw. For years, she put out a large garden and canned the excess each year. Irene also enjoyed eating out. Her favorite spots were the Hobo Hut and the Brau House and with someone else doing the cooking she liked attending the local church festivals for their fried chicken. When it was time to relax, she watched I.U. basketball or the Lawrence Welk Show.
Irene is survived by her sons Raymond Barnhorst of Columbus, Paul Barnhorst of Helena, Montana, Robert Barnhorst of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gerald Barnhorst of Edinburg; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by sister Rita Abplanalp; brothers Stanley and Alfred Fritsch and grandchild Brian Barnhorst.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 13, from 5-8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 14, at St. Maurice Church in Napoleon with Rev. Bill Turner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the St. Maurice Cemetery Fund or the Hospice of St. Peter’s. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, is entrusted with arrangements.
Robert L. Terrican
Robert L. Terrican, 93, of Berwyn, Pennsylvania, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017 at his home. He was born in Newark, New Jersey on April 8, 1923, the son of Donald and Marjorie Poule Terrican. He was married to Charlotte Meierle of New Marion, on May 6, 1950 and she preceded him in death on March 17, 2012.
Survivors include one daughter, Anne (Raymond) Haddad of Berwyn; and two grandchildren, Kevin and Kelsey Haddad.
Mr. Terrican was a veteran of WWII where he served in the Army Air Corp with the 397th bomber squadron. His specialties in the Army Air Corp were in Meteorology and Aerial Navigation. For service to his country Robert received the American Theatre Service Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Butler University in 1949 and his Master’s Degree from Indiana University. In civilian life Mr. Terrican was vice-president of operations for the electronics and space division of Emerson Electronics in St. Louis.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, January 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Madison. Burial will be in the St. Magdalene Cemetery in Madison with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the St. Magdalene Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.
Barbara Gilbert
Barbara Gilbert, 70, of Milan/Moores Hill, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at Christ hospital in Cincinnati. She was born in Lawrenceburg on June 28, 1946, the daughter of Elton and Phyllis Wellman Schilson. She was married to Donald Gilbert on December 9, 1967 in Dearborn County and he survives.
Survivors include one son, Robert Copeland of Milan; one daughter, Dawnelle (RJ) O’Neal of Osgood; four grandchildren, Paul, Holly, Villete and Mary-Kate; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Schilson of Milan; and one sister, Kathy Myers (Bob) Kreese of Versailles. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Gilbert worked as a manager at the Liquor Cabinet in Milan and Moores Hill. Her hobbies included making and attending craft shows, grandchildren and watching birds. Barb loved to cook and help people, she would help even a stranger that needed it and never ask for anything in return.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor’s choice
