South Ripley Cross Country Coach Jim Cole recognized the originator of the Great Pumpkin Race, Mr. John Kalb, prior to presenting the awards.
Kalb, a former SR educator and coach of many sports, had attended the event in support of his granddaughter, Taylor Cole, who ran for the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels in this year’s Meet. Mr. Kalb was not available at time of award presentations for a photo.
The Great Pumpkin Race is set for Thursday evening every year, in conjunction with the Versailles Pumpkin Show. Along with that there is a tradition of passing pumpkin pies out for the teams and their coaches to munch on after the race and medal presentations.
