Ripley County 4-H Horse & Pony Show, a success

There was solid competition from surrounding 4-Hers, a nice crowd and beautiful weather for the opening day of the two day, second Annual Ripley County 4-H sponsored Area 1 Horse & Pony Show at the Ripley County Fairground Horse Arena. Smiles a mile wide as competition from 4-Hers from 3rd through 12th grade, with horses and ponies from wee to huge, young to old did their thing in the ring; a welcomed event for those who love riding. If this and last year’s attendance are an inkling of what is to be expected, interest in the show looks to be promising for our area along with growth. Last year 10 counties were represented. This year that grew to a dozen and expectations are it will grow larger as time marches along. These things don’t merely just happen, dedicated parents, grandparents and folks of interest put forth diligent hard work and planning to make it a reality for the 4-H Horse and Pony enthusiast.

For the horse fancier without a horse, the price can’t be beat as there is no admission fee to watch. The beauty of the horses and apparel worn in competition is an eye opener for sure. It is a huge effort at the very least to maintain, feed and house their horses and the participants deserve recognition.
The two day, Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12 show consisted of Western classes on Saturday and English classes on Sunday, that included Halter class exhibition, horsemanship competition and riding events each day. Only a few of the performers are pictured, with hopes of catching more local horse action during the 2016 Firecracker Special, a two-day event beginning in Greensburg at Decatur County Fairgrounds on Saturday July 2, and continuing at The Ripley County Fairgrounds in Osgood on Sunday July 3.
The Horse and Pony Competitions ran until after the midnight hour on Saturday, and opened again at 8 a.m. on Sunday where it ran to around 4 p.m. That’s around 20 plus or minus hours of horse exhibition entertainment for the onlooker and a tremendous range of events for the contestant to participate in.
