‘Play ball!’ Tribe opener truly a bone-chilling event

Blasting winds, dropping temps and a completely overcast sky was Mother Nature’s selected scenario on opening day for the 2016 Milan Indians Varsity Baseball team, Monday, April 4. But, that is how it goes with Indiana spring sports seasons: “play ball.” Indians Head Baseball Coach Jeff Stutler’s team met with a tough first inning behind senior pitcher Shawn Fox, as many unforced errors behind, in front and around him, led to the Hauser Jets scoring of four runs in the top of the first inning

Enough as it turned out to determine a victor at game’s end, as the Jets closed the game in five by the 10 Run Rule, 11-1 Milan. As results developed during the tribe’s defense during the first Jet at bat, Luke Lonneman collected a fly-out in right center field for the first out of the Indians defensive season. After nine Jets had taken an at-bat and put four runs on the scoreboard, Milan came to their first at bat of the new season. Indian junior Jordan Burton was nailed by the very first pitch delivery by the Hauser Jet pitcher, thus sending Burton hustling to first base. One up, one on. Enter batter number two for the tribe, sophomore Jacob Burton, who delivered a long ball to the base of the fence in left center field, driving Jordan across the plate for run number one of the tribe’s new season, with a stand up double and an RBI for his first at bat. Unfortunately for Milan, as fate would have it, that would be the total scoring for the Indians in game one.
The tribe hits the fields for 2016 short several senior players, who graduated last year. Parting were twins Luke and Sam Rehn, Brennan Tinker, Mason Cutter, Jordan Hoegeman, and Chase Holton, who are all leaving main spots to be filled. The 2016 Milan Indians baseball program includes 33 team members with three seniors, eight juniors, nine sophomores, and 13 freshmen.
