With every new season, comes change and that is indeed no different for the South Ripley Lady Raider basketball program of 2016-17. The absence of Head Coach Kevin Mack made possible a return of Head Coach Brian Samples as their leader once again. A positive extended Lady Raiders volleyball season run to Regional action knotted many of the basketball team’s players up until it was virtually time to hit the basketball court.

In game one of the new season the Class 2A SR Lady Raiders hosted the Class 3A . Batesville Lady Bulldogs with minimal time to adjust from the volleyball team mind set to that of basketball, Coach Samples and crew pulled together to make the necessary alterations and pull off a resounding 54-42, 12 point victory in their varsity season opener against the IHSAA Class 3A Batesville Lady Bulldogs. A relatively even game through three periods of back and forth lead changes found SR trailing after the first period, 10-12. The Lady Raiders had gained the edge by the halftime break. The third period found the Lady Bulldogs gaining momentum to carry a 35-31 lead into the fourth and final period's action; however, a resounding third quarter scoring exhibition by Lady Raider senior Julia Rea would become the flash that would spread into a dominating SR flame to claim a Lady Raider victory. Rea had only connected for a single field goal in the first period, before going scoreless through periods two and three; however, in the fourth and final period, she became a scoring dynamo, depositing a three-pointer, nailed a pair of FT's, connected for 3 FG scores and 1/2 FTs and added another FG along with 4/6 FT shooting to a total of 18 points for the final period, resulting in her game team high total of 20 points.
Lady Raider sophomore Elexah Roepke also came on big during the battle, connecting for a dozen points. Roepke's scoring was a more balanced effort that included a pair of FT misses a FG score and a pair of FT connections in the first period, a FG and 2/3 FT delivery in the second period and a pair of FG scores in the third, before going silent through the fourth. Both Lady Raider sophomore Morgan Peetz and junior Kiley Sparks connected for seven points each during game action. Peetz a FG and three-pointer in the second period, followed by a FG addition in the third. Sparks points were the result of a pair of FG scores in the third and 1/2 FTs and a FG in the fourth. Lady Raider Toria Tucker added a FG in the second period and another FG in the fourth for four points, while junior Mariah Gentile scored a FG and sophomore Jill Scott netted a pair of FT connections during first period action to round out South Ripley’s 54 point total scoring for the game.
