Jac-Cen-Del Eagles claim a trifecta with RCT girls varsity, girls JV and boys JV title

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Playing to an anticipated conclusion, while dominating their respective seasons to date, the 2016 annual Ripley County Basketball Tournament resulted in a Coach Scott Smith led Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Varsity Girls Championship victory, on Friday night, January 8, at JCDHS, by a 23 point, 65-42 final. Following the JCD victory, the Osgood Fire Department led a victory caravan followed by community celebration. Next to capture a title was the Coach Matt McNew led Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles JV girls, who battled for the championship victory, Saturday morning, January 9, hosted at South Ripley High School against the Batesville Lady Bulldogs by a nine point differential at 49-40.

New at the lead as Jac-Cen-Del Eagle JV Boys Basketball Coach, Brad Goldsberry led his team to victory shortly after their Saturday, January 9, noon start, also played at SRHS. The young Eagles overwhelmed their Batesville Bulldog opponent by a 16 point margin, 46-30 for the final tally to claim the boys JV title, and hardware, for the third of the four contest RCT Title. On Saturday evening, the tourney concluded with the Travis Wrightsman led South Ripley Raiders receiving the crowning glory of the 92nd Annual Varsity Boys Basketball Tournament, as they claimed victory over the Batesville Bulldogs 74-54. The Raiders’ nucleus has the advantage of a seven senior member dedicated team joined by four juniors and a sophomore with basketball and winning priority one. South Ripley left no stone unturned battling to a dominating 20-point advantage at game’s end.

The Raiders Varsity Boys road to the title will be highlighted in Thursday’s edition of The Versailles Republican. While some of these teams can call their victory a repeat, most have found many years of hard work and efforts had gone astray to the Batesville Bulldog teams during annual RCT action. Today, for the time being, the celebration is of a new “top dog.”
