The Tribe victoriously opened the season with a 37-21 win over the visiting Rushville Lions on Friday, August 21. Sadly, with just 30 seconds remaining in a contest, a running play for senior speedster Michael Thompson resulted in a season ending injury as he took a helmet to the knee. Ironically, at 23 seconds into the Milan – Rushville season opener, (23) Michael Thompson ran for 65 yards for the touchdown, followed by the PAT scoring kick of senior teammate Caleb Vinup (9) (Milan 7-0). Just 17 seconds into second period action, Indian Thompson (23) added a second TD score from 4 yards out, again followed by a successful PAT kick by (9) Vinup for 14-0. Rushville eluded Indian defenders to run for a 76 yard TD score and added the PAT for 7-14 Milan. Indian Thompson added a third TD score with 1:37 remaining in the first half, but the attempted two-point conversion pass from Indian QB Blane Beck (10) to teammate sophomore Austin King (20) failed, looking to leave Milan a 19-7 score at the half; however, a determined Indians’ team found a QB Beck (10) TD pass for 11 yards to senior teammate Nathan Austing (40). Again, an attempt at the two-point conversion went awry.

Milan left the field for their locker room up comfortably by 18 at 25-7, with second half action to follow. At 6:04 in the third, Thompson (23) added a 1 yd. TD run to his point tally with his third TD score of the game. A PAT attempt by Vinup (9) was errant, (31-7). The Lions answered with a 50 yd. TD scoring run and PAT for 14 points at the 4:49 mark (Rush. 14-31 Milan). The Lions again added a TD/PAT combination for 20 at the 6:03 mark of the fourth period, cutting their deficit to 12; however at 3:17 remaining in the game, Thompson (23) added what would eventually become his last career TD for the Tribe after a 54 yard scoring run. The Tribe had amassed a total of 39 points, including the five TD scoring effort of senior Thompson (23), but again, no PAT additional point as Rushville blocked Milan’s attempt at a PAT score. Scoring concluded and MHS won their season opener, 37-21 over Rushville. Tribe’s QB Blane Beck (10) went 10-15 for 158 passing yards including a TD and an interception. The loss of Thompson along with others on the injured list, found Milan falling hard 14-48 in the second game of their season to host Batesville High School on August 28, for the annual “Battle of the Bell.”
The Indians varsity will host Lawrenceburg Tigers in their Friday, Sept. 4, slated game with the kick-off set for 7 p.m. The Indians JV is at Lawrenceburg High School at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8.
