Ripley County 4-H Fair antique tractor pull runs inside at Kev’s ‘Field of Dreams’

Ripley County native Kevin Menchhofer is a well-respected antique tractor sled operator, with his services desired and rendered statewide for pulling events including the Ripley County 4-H Fair. This year’s pull slated for opening day Sunday morning at 10 a.m. became part of a two-day pull held at his facility, “Kev’s Field of Dreams” near Osgood due to a rain-soaked track in front of the grandstands and inability to run a previously recently slated pull event elsewhere. Of the many pullers competing, 19 stayed overnight Saturday night following a day of pulling and were ready to hit competition bright and early on Sunday morning,

Pictured left, a man with a dream, Kevin Menchhofer, finds fulfilling reality aboard his pulling sled to the pleasure and benefit of many antique pull enthusiasts.

Joining the array of puller enthusiasts were competitors from seven states that included the most distant New Hampshire. That competitor drove 1,000 miles from New Hampshire to pull in the Menchhofer event. The owners of the tractor caught a flight to Indy, then transportation to the pull; 1,000 miles and approximately $1,000 spent to make it a reality. Saturday’s competition included approximately 165 hitches with Sunday’s pull adding an additional 240 hook-ups. Concerning the development of the inside pulling track, Menchhofer stated, “Several of the usual pullers joined me over approximately a three-month period undertaking the erection of the building that the pulls are held in.” He went on to say, “These folks and I care deeply about one another and our families, and we open each pull gathering before its onset with a prayer. We have fun and fellowship and genuinely share concern for one another, including issues of health.

Currently, one of our own long-time, regular pullers has an issue with cancer. We pray for her healing. Yes, there is competition here but far more than that there is unity and genuine concern for the betterment of all.
