Numerous competitors in Fox Hollow Rodeo events

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Returning for their second year on the venue of the Ripley County 4-H Fair in Osgood was the Fox Hollow Rodeo, finding another strong reception by the local residents. Some residents, who had ventured to participate in last year’s novice bull-riding event experience, anxiously awaited the opportunity to compete once again.

Five returning for another go-around of the 16 challengers included Ashley Braunagel, Alex Lindeman, Stefan Anderson, Austin Murray and Caleb Kelly. They were joined by 11 new faces which included Eve Galbreath, Chase Holton, Evan Braunagel, Karl Hoffrogge, Cele DeChristopher, Nathan Romans, Corey Cutshall, John Trowbridge, Taylor Scudder, Warren Stuart and Stella Caudill who dared to face this year’s challenge.

Pictured left, quite likely one of and if not the youngest rider running the barrels during the 2015 Ripley County 4-H Fair presented by Fox Hollow Rodeo in front of the grandstands is South Ripley Lady Raider Kyla Jeffries. Jeffries smashed the junior horse competition knocking them out of the park with four-for-four 1st place finishes in Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, Flag Racing and Keyhole. Jeffries is pictured competing against adults in the Fox Hollow Rodeo Barrel Race event.

The Wednesday, July 22, event found good weather and spirits high with novice bull-rider Caleb Kelly of Milan the only contender hanging in for the eight seconds to win a belt buckle with a score of 72. Caleb took place in the Osgood Fire Department Truck Drags where he competed to a tie with no losses after several rounds before losing a transmission, which left him finishing fourth. Milan Lady Indian Ashley Braunagel returned to ride the bull, after her debut last year, and among others was first-timer Eve Galbreath of Switzerland County. Among the novice attempting the bull ride was 2015 Milan Indian graduate Chase Holton, who determined following his short stint on the bull’s back that the place to focus was the center of the bull, not its side; just enough to wet the appetite. He’ll be back! From a dozen youngsters, taking on the adventure in the Mutton Buster sheep riding class to 16 professionals riding the Jackpot Pro Stock bulls to several trick shooters on horseback and 21 barrel racers along with a host of arena clowns there was something to fill everyone’s rodeo fantasy, including the bulls, horses and sheep.

Many of our own Ripley County residents not only enjoyed the show but became part of it, as the Woulms of Milan were among the shooters from horseback. Winning competitors in the barrel racing event included Laura Swango 1st at 14.07, Jimmy Bryant 2nd at 14.58, 2015 OA graduate and Dearborn County 4-H’er Emily Harm 3rd at 14.95 with Ripley County 4-H’er and Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle senior Taylor Carroll 4th at 15.01. Other Barrel Race contenders included Justin Beach, Jessica Taulbee, Keara Patton, Cody Bryant, Ganessa Shankland, Hannah Daugherty, Deanna Meyers, Jolene Cook, Vonda Bowling, Stella Caudill, Kaylee Harpring, Amber Kraus, Brittany Kraus and Keara Patton. Other Ripley County 4-H’ers taking the barrel race challenge included Kyla Jeffries, Kendall Viel, Morgan Peetz and Krista Gayheart. Among 17 Jackpot Pro Stock Bull Riding attempts, three riders stayed in for the count of eight placing first thru fourth. Daniel Tinsman cashed in at 1st with a 78, David Markham 2nd at 75.5, Daniel Tinsman 3rd at 73 and Josh Hoff 4th at 72. Other riders included Dustin Seaver, Nathan Shankliand, Albert Schwartz, Skyler Nevil, Ray Cook, Devon Sexton, Austin Welch, Trent Cullver, Ben Park, Richard Engle, Austin Bradley, Derrick Smith and Wesley Grubbs.
Many thanks to Ripley County Fair Board member Tammy Sidell and members of the Fox Hollow Rodeo personnel for information and names of contenders, aiding in our coverage of this entertaining event.
