Weather contributed to low numbers for Ripley County Chamber of Commerce 5K Run/Walk the Square event

The annual Chamber of Commerce Run/Walk the Square 5K event for 2015, held on Saturday morning, June 27, found numbers down compared to most years. The culprit was a cloudy and threatening sky that fortunately passed without further dampening the spirits of those who showed up to compete and visit with friends.
As the runner/walker set gathered near the starting line, Lions Club members worked grilling chicken for the annual dinner, and the American Legion crew set up camp for the annual car show. Even though the raindrops held off, auto enthusiast trickled in at a very slow pace, but as the weather report gave a verdict that the storm had passed, streets began to fill up with a wide variety of models and years of vehicles.

Capturing the overall first place among male runners in the 5K was 16-year-old Evan Strobel of Vine Grove, Kentucky, with his finishing time of 18:45. Capturing the overall first place among female runners in the 5K was 39-year-old Amy Lowe of Dillsboro with her finishing time of 20:52. Setting the pace to claim the overall first place finisher spot among male walkers for the event was South Ripley School Corporation Superintendent, 51-year-old Rob Moorhead of Aurora with his race time of 36:48. Among female walker entrants, the overall first place spot for the 5K was captured by 44-year-old Julie Gray of Holton with her race time of 42:46. The event participation number was only 47 this year. The absence of many familiar faces to the event was noted even more so as the results were read at the presentation of ribbons at the conclusion. As has been the case of recent races and a common figure to find at HS 5K events, Stuart Road Racing monitored the finishes of the race.
