Saying good-bye to some important people in local sports

Three well-known and respected educators will be retiring this year. Todd Yates of Milan High School, Debra Jett of South Ripley and Dedra Montgomery of Jac-Cen-Del retired at the end of the school year. Todd Yates
Todd Yates graduated from Milan High School with the Class of 1978, Franklin College in 1982 and received a master’s degree from ISU in 1988.Yates has dedicated his entire teaching career in service to his Milan Community School Corporation, families and students, where he began substituting after college and served as a reading remediation teacher at the elementary for part of a year before finishing the year teaching government/economics.
In one of her last acts as South Ripley Athletic Director, retiring after 37+ years of service, 36 of them at SR, from the SSR schools is Debra Jett, having served as a teacher, coach and athletic director. Jett, a 1973 Switzerland Co. High School graduate, graduated from Indiana State University in 1977, where she also received her master’s degree. Her first year teaching was with the Jac-Cen-Del where she also led as the assistant Lady Eagles basketball coach. Her career with SR began in 1978 – 79, teaching science, PE and health. For 33 years, she served as the Lady Raiders head volleyball coach where her teams acquired nine ORVC titles, two Sectional championships (finishing ORVC Conference action in the top three 31 of the 33 seasons), while claiming numerous Ripley County Championships Titles as well.
Retiring after 37+ years at the end of the 2014 – 15 school year from Jac-Cen-Del is Dedra Montgomery. She began her career in education at the North Knox School Corporation as a teacher in PE/health in the 1977 – 78 school year and continued in that position through the end of the 1981 – 82 school year. She found her true calling at the Jac-Cen-Del school community with the onset of the 1982 – 1983 school year, where they have been fortunate that she has stayed through to retirement this 2014 – 15 school year
