The Reservation Restaurant was named the 2015 Ripley County Business of the Year. The Ripley County Chamber of Commerce honored The Reservation Restaurant at the 17th annual Business Recognition luncheon. About 100 people attended the luncheon held at the REMC’s training center in Osgood on Wednesday, May 13.

Left, Greg Holt, Chamber President Phil Hart, and Jeff Holt, both owners of The Reservation Restaurant, were awarded Business of the Year.

Phil Hart, president of the Ripley County Chamber of Commerce, complimented The Reservation Restaurant for their service to Ripley County and to their customers from around the Midwest.

“The Reservation Restaurant exemplifies the true nature of what it means to be the Chamber’s 2015 Business of the Year. They not only reach out to serve their local community, they go beyond by serving the entire county.”

Their customers from around the tristate also shop in Ripley County and share their fondness of our communities with their friends and families and that helps all of us, he added. Amy Thomas, executive director of the Ripley County Chamber, explained the Business of the Year is selected by a committee of chamber directors. The committee collects information regarding many businesses such as the number of years of commitment to the community, years of chamber membership, services that they provide to the area and their unselfish giving to our entire area.

In accepting the award, co-owner Jeff Holt thanked their staff and customers, and half-jokingly added, “The bankers for the loan!” noting he got a loan and a lecture from Ripley County Bank’s Frank Samples. He appreciated both! Holt added, “It’s tough to have a small business these days.”

The restaurant, considered a landmark in Milan with its famous teepee at the corner of SR 101 and SR 46, employs 35 people. A few of the staff Amy Williams, Donna Livingston and Debbie Ison have been there since the first days they opened.

Alesha Neal, chairperson of the business awards luncheon, introduced the 2015 Business of the Year. The Reservation is owned by brothers Jeff and Greg Holt. Their parents, Jerry and Rose Holt, started in the restaurant business in the early 1970s when they purchased the Milan Tavern.  “This experience with operating a restaurant, knowing good food, and meeting the wants and needs of the community made the purchase of The Reservation Restaurant a natural fit,” Greg Holt said. Since 1985, The Reservation has had two major renovations to increase seating capacity from 40 to 170 people, adding a banquet room to serve as a meeting place for business dinners, community events, and family gatherings. The restaurant also serves as the meeting place for the Milan’s Lions club. They are honored to host the National Honor Society induction ceremony each year. The restaurant is known for good food, and there’s always a daily homemade special along with real mashed potatoes and a fresh vegetable that folks can look forward to. They have expanded the menu to include other choices, many of which are suggested by their customers.

The Holts said it has been their goal to run a family friendly restaurant in the community where they have grown up. “We are thankful to God for blessing us with so many wonderful staff members over the years. Each has brought his/her unique talents and personalities to The Reservation in order to create the family friendly atmosphere for which we have strived. It has been our pleasure to serve the families of our community over the last 30 years and we hope to continue for the next 30 years (God-willing). “

Besides the business of the year, new businesses were also recognized. Those include A&E Automotive, B Inspired Yoga Studio, Shoe Sensation, Studio Vapes, Head 2 Toe Hair and Nail Salon, KATE’rd Cakes, all in Batesville, El Obrero, GH Coffee Company, Kelly’s Convenience Store, The Gooseberry Flower and Gift Shop, The Quilters Nook, all based in Versailles, plus George’s Family Pharmacy in Milan and Milan Primary Care, and Tax Services and More in Osgood. Also mentioned at the meeting were those businesses under new ownership: Gilpin’s Monuments is now owned by Bryan Gilpin, Gilpin’s Screen Printing, Embroidery and Signs, Natalie Gilpin is sole owner, and Manna Inc./IGA Versailles by the Robert Wood family.
