The Milan Lady Indians varsity softball team found positive action behind freshman pitcher Lexi Wert on the road at Rising Sun High School where they posted an 9-8, seven-inning victory. The game was played at Rising Sun due to wet conditions on the Milan High School field. This game played as a Rising Sun home game and leaves the scheduled 5 p.m. away game on May 1, a home game at MHS.

Pictured left, Milan Lady Indians senior Ashley Guthrie unloads for a 2 RBI home run over the Rising Sun High School right center field fence, advancing the Tribe’s edge to 7-0 in the top of the second inning with two out, off Lady Shiners ace, Dedru, forcing them to make an early pitching change to get out of the inning.
Senior Lady Shiners ace pitcher Alix Dedru amassed a 7-0 lead in the top of the second inning before the Shiners switched pitchers, sending Dedru to short-stop and Tiffany Vinup to the mound along with other fielding changes in an attempt to halt the Tribe’s assault. On the flip side of the coin, freshman Lexi Wert dealt blow after blow to the struggling Lady Shiners allowing her fielders to shut them down in a routine manner.
The Lady Shiners rallied to score a run in the bottom of the second inning. With neither team adding runs in the third, the Tribe added run number eight in the top of the fourth; however, the Shiners added two in the bottom of the inning, held Milan in the fifth, and added another leading to a one-run gain by the tribe in the top of the sixth for a total of 9. The Lady Shiners struck for four more to a score of 8-9, allowing them to progress dangerously close before the end of the game. The Lady Shiners defense in the top of the seventh called for pitching starter Dedru to return to the mound where she managed to escape the Lady Indian at bat without allowing another tribe score. The Lady Indians would not be denied, not this night, as Lady Indian Lexi Wert finished her game on the mound while battling to an ORVC conference game victory at 9-8 over last year’s sectional champs. While doing so, the Tribe played three varsity players short with one injured and two away with the Milan High School band. A solid win for the Tribe and a huge building stone laid in their ORVC season aspirations and expectations.
