IHSAA Class 2A Girls Sectional site: SCHS

Switzerland County High School is the site for the IHSAA Class 2A Girls Sectional, not Milan High School. Milan and South Ripley will play in this Sectional on Friday night.

Milan Lady Indians
Varsity falls to SD Lady Cougars, 3 at the final horn

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Coach Bob Bressert’s new Milan Lady Indians team found themselves trailing 15 at the half, and were tied with Coach Jessica (McConnell) Nichols, ’04 graduate of South Ripley’s visiting South Decatur Lady Cougars at 55 with 9.2 seconds remaining in regulation. A release from the corner for the three-point victory came with mere tenths of a second remaining on the MHS scoreboard clock, by Lady Cougar sophomore Stacy Fox (14). One team or the other was going to leave the gym heartbroken and tonight it was the Lady Indians, as the last home stand for the seniors came up just short of the mark. The teams played equally, with opportunities at given points of the game to put the other away. Going out in style, senior Lady Indians leader Grace Herzog’s (5) outing included a 37 point contribution of the team’s 65 total point production. Senior teammate Harlie Miller (31) mastered her Lady Cougars rivals to score 23 points. Senior teammates Becky Fred Hoffrogge (23) added three and Paige Lacey (10) rounded out Tribe scoring with two. (Non-scoring Lady Indians: 00 Sr Tapanga Gauck, Jr 24-Kristina Marksberry, Jr 12-Kaylynn Money, Fr 12-Baylee Yorn, Fr 15-Anjeanette Laws & 3 Jr-Cierra Core) Lately, the Lady Indians varsity has shown that they have every intent of putting the stigma of being the “easy mark” to rest!

Milan Lady Indian senior Harlie Miller (31) launches a "ring the bell" three pointer from above the arc. Miller connected on several three's en route to a 23 point production in her final home game stand against the South Decatur Lady Cougars at MHS. Down by 15 at the half, the tribe led by three at the end of three only to fall by three at games end, 65-68

Game insight from courtside:

Quarter One
The Lady Cougars opened scoring with a 3 pointer, Indian senior Miller (31) countered for the tie. After a Lady Cougars FG, Lady Indian senior Herzog (5) countered for the 5-5 tie. After a Miller FG, SD countered for a 7-7 tie. SD regained the lead with a FG score, Herzog countered for a 9-9 tie. After a pair of Herzog FT connections, SD nailed a 3-pointer to take the 12-11 lead. Herzog drove for a FG and the lead, SD countered, but before the period ended, Miller nailed another 3 pointer to knot the game at 16.

Quarter Two
A SD Run away to 40-15! The Lady Cougars added 1 of 2 FT scoring, a 3-pointer and a FG before Miller netted another 3-pointer for the Lady Indians. The Lady Cougars added a FG and 3-pointer, Herzog nailed a pair of FTs. South Decatur nailed a 3-pointer and Herzog a FG. South Decatur added 3 of 4 of FT connections, a FG and a 3-pointer. Herzog drove and connected for a FG score; however, SD would put the last score in the scorebook before the half with another FG to lead by 15, 40-25.

Quarter Three
The Tribe re-appears and takes a 50-47 lead heading into the fourth! Herzog started off with a FG followed by a Miller FG. SD connected on 1 of 2 from the charity stripe to which Miller sank another 3 pointer. South Decatur missed on a pair of FT opportunities, then added a FG. Herzog missed a pair of FTs, but then scored a FG but missed a chance of turning it into a three-point play. Miller added a FG. Now trailing by seven at 37-43, Herzog went scoring ballistic with a pair of FTs, an old fashioned FG/FT combination, and another FG for the tie. Continuing on the scoring spree, Herzog added two more FGs to the game total and set Milan in the lead by four at 47-43 near the 2:00 mark. An SD FG was followed by Herzog’s connection on one of two FTs, then another SD connection on 2 FTs to which Herzog drove the floor to score the final basket of the period, Milan was now leading by three, 50-47.

Quarter Four
Needless to say, no one was interesting in leaving the game early, nor was it a place for the faint of heart at this point!
SD answered the bell with a FG score, but failed to add the additional FT offering. A pair of SD FT connections later, SD had taken the one point lead. Miller cashed in on another downtown 3 pointer; Milan back on top. An SD FG countered to knot the game at 53. A Miller steal and drive the length of the court put the Tribe back on top. The Cougars missed on a pair of freebies, at 4:02, Herzog added a FG. A pair of Lady Cougars FT connections led to one of two by Herzog; however, senior teammate Becky Hoffrogge added a FG to put them up by five, 60-55. A pair of FT misses by SD led to them adding a FG score. Herzog missed the front end of a one plus one charity stripe offering. South Decatur connected on a FG, senior Lady Indian Lacey missed a pair of FT shots and SD added another FG to take the 61-60 lead. Just under two minutes remaining, Indian Lacey (10)connected on a pair of FT offerings to put Milan back up by one. Hoffrogge added one of two FTs; however, at 1:14 a foul sent SD to the charity stripe where they knotted the game at 63. Herzog connected on a pair of FTs to go up by two. At 35.2, Miller missed the front end of a one plus one, leading to an SD FG score and the tie at 65. Hoffrogge went to the charity stripe and missed the two offered at 12.7 seconds. Battling for the basketball following a time-out, it was awarded to South Decatur. With 9.2, seconds remaining, SD proceeded under pressure to get the ball up court in time for a corner shot by junior Stacy Fox (24) that zipped the net for a three point score and a three point South Decatur Lady Cougar victory ay 68-65.
