On October 2, the last scheduled regular season boys soccer match, South Ripley came out with a vengeance and played to a victory over the team fielded by Coach Derek Jones Jac-Cen-Del Eagles, regaining possession of the coveted “MO” Matt Obendorf Matt Obendorf Memorial Traveling Trophy.
The Trophy is in memory of former SRHS Head Soccer Coach Matt Obendorf, after losing his battle with cancer. The Eagles had gained possession of the trophy last season and played to a victory over SR to retain it earlier this season at JCDHS before forfeiting it in the last battle of the regular season.
Having secured the ORVC Boys Soccer Championship Title prior to their SR second meeting, JCD Coach Jones put primarily JV players on the field to gain experience, while saving his Eagle varsity players from possible injury during the contest in preparing for their sectional run. Proudly, the Raiders on the other hand, came full bore and scored basically at will to stymie JCD in the last scheduled half, regaining the “MO” Trophy possession at event’s conclusion. It was a brutal evening to be out on the field or even outside for that matter with temps in the low 50s, drizzling to driving rain and wind that cut like a knife. A half-time decision by coaches to play only 20 minutes of the second half was without a doubt the proper and favorable call to players and supportive fans alike. A game result proved positive for both Eagles and Raiders, as SR won the trophy without injury and Jac-Cen-Del rested many players.
