Milan Lady Indians open action with promise, but lose to Southwestern Rebels in Class 2A Volleyball Sectional #45

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Short lived positivity resonated for Coach Terry Wullenweber’s Milan Lady Indians in the IHSAA Sectional #45 opening night game two action bid on October 22 at South Ripley High School, battling to a first set 25-19 victory over the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels, then falling 1-3 by scores of 21-25, 22-25 and 15-25.

Lady Indian seniors Courtney Cann (6) and Shelby Wullenweber (1), pause for one last photo before the Tribe’s extended volleyball season hopes are dashed during the 2015 SRHS hosted IHSAA Girls Volleyball Sectional #45 opening night game two action. Although the Lady Indians amassed a first set victory, they fell in four to the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels.

Set One to Milan
The Lady Indians failed on the opening serve but tied the score at 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 before battling to a 9-8 lead behind Abby Yelton. Tribe teammate Kristina Marksberry served her Lady Indians team to a seven point advantage from 12-9 to 17-10. Point scoring back and forth between servers found Lady Indian Yelton delivering the final blow with her 25-19 serve delivery.

Sets 2, 3 & 4 to SwH

The Lady Indians knotted the score at 1 and 2 before trailing to a 13-13 tie. Tie scores at 15, 17, 20 and 21 eventually led to a SwH 25-22 win of set number two to knot the best of five matches at one apiece. A minimum of four sets would be required to determine the advancer.

Set 3 to SwH
The Lady Indians knotted the score at 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, before earning the 9-7 two point lead off serving Lady Indian Yelton. Ties at 11 and 12 followed with Milan again taking the lead from 13-12 to 15-13 off service by Lady Indian Lexi Wert. A tie at 18 gave way to a SwH lead and eventual three-point advantage at 22-19 off the serving of Lady Rebel sophomore Prezley Hartman. A few servers later, SwH capped the tribe at 25-21 off the ace served by Lady Rebel freshman Kiah Means, to lead the match two sets to one.

Set 4, the finale to SwH
As with earlier sets, the Lady Indians knotted the score at 2, 3 and 4; however, unlike earlier sets, the Lady Rebels pressed the pedal to the metal to grasp an eight point edge at 18-10 Milan, behind serving of Lady Rebel junior Brittany Ralston. The SwH run had certainly gained momentum for the Lady Rebels and obviously bewildered the Lady Indian drive, already trailing two sets to one. With extended season hanging literally on the ropes, the Tribe would only make minimal dents in the scoring advantage, with Lady Rebel freshman Abby Ralston affixing the final stamp on the game with her serve for a 25-15 SwH 3 set to one match victory. With the match conclusion, Milan found the extended season hopes over, as had the Lady Raiders before them and the solid effort by the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels gaining them the right of passage to a Saturday morning, October 24, showdown against the Austin Lady Eagles at 11 a.m.
