Robert R. “Soap” Sutherlin


Robert R. “Soap” Sutherlin, 76, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015 at his home. He was born at Lebanon on October 5, 1938, the son of Roscoe and Josephine Byrd Sutherlin.

Survivors include one son, Brandon Palmer of Indianapolis; two daughters, Leslie Palmer of Louisville, and Angel Palmer of Versailles; three grandchildren, Chase Richards, Julia Puig, and Finley Josephine Palmer; one brother, Larry (Sue) Sutherlin of Versailles; one sister, Joyce (Jim) Samples of Versailles; nephews, David (Leslie) Sutherlin of Milan, and Doug (Loreana) Sutherlin of Sellersburg; three nieces, Nicole (Chris) Wiedeman of Cincinnati, Kerry (Mark) McConnell of Delaware, and Debbie (Andy) Holbrook of Ft. Wayne. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Sutherlin was a 1956 graduate of Versailles High School and received his BS degree in Civil Engineering from Purdue University in 1961. He served with the US Army as an engineer from 1962 to 1964 and with the US Army Reserves until 1968.

In his civilian career Soap worked as an Area Construction Engineer with the Indiana State Highway Department Seymour District for 43 years, retiring in 2004. He was a life member of the Versailles American Legion where he had held all offices and was also past District Adjutant for the American Legion. He currently served as the bugler for all military funerals. Soap was an avid follower of Purdue basketball and had done league bowling at Pollard’s Bowl in Versailles for 43 years.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion in care of the funeral home.


Ruth Graver Johnson


It has pleased our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to take unto himself his faithful servant Ruth Graver Johnson (Lexington, KY) on Monday, January 19, 2015. She was born May 2, 1935 to the late Leroy and Deloris Graver in Dillsboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald C. Johnson. She is survived by her children Steve (Danna) Bowlds, Lexington; Andria (Jeff) Blankenship, Fort Meyers, FL; Brad (Laura) Bowlds, Laurel, MD; and stepchildren Tom (Vicki) Johnson, Jocie Johnson, and Terri Wickham; 26 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Paul Edward Graver, sister Lois Grave Lade, and sisters-in-law Karen Graver and Wanda Graver. She is preceded in death by her brothers David Graver and John Graver and stepsons Gregg Johnson and Tom Wickham.

She received her BA in Social Work from the University of Kentucky in 1983. A year later she married Donald C. Johnson and moved to Nebraska. After his retirement they worked for Laborers for Christ, building and remodeling churches and schools throughout the country. In every aspect of her life it was her faith in Jesus that sustained her and she passed this love of the Lord onto her children.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road. The funeral service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2255 Eastland Parkway on Friday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m. with visitation at 9 a.m. The interment will be in Dillsboro on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery. Local arrangements by DeVries Funeral Home.
