Marjorie M. Reed Olds, 91, of Versailles, entered this life on May 15, 1923, in Jefferson County, near Canaan. She was the loving daughter of the late, Franklin and Marian Alice “Minnie” Gunnion Reed.
Marjorie was raised in Jefferson County and was a 1941 graduate of Central High School. She was united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1945 to Harold Eugene “Gene” Olds in Vevay. This happy union of 44 years was blessed with a son, Michael Reed and a daughter, Vickie Ann.
Marjorie had resided in Versailles the past 64 years and had worked for the Jefferson Proving Ground early in life as a clerk. She retired after 19 years of service with the Ripley County ASCS Office. Marjorie was a faithful member of the Versailles Baptist Church and the Missionary Circle. She enjoyed membership in the Central High School Alumni. She enjoyed reading and being with her family. Marjorie died on Saturday, August 30, 2014, at 7:53 a.m. at the Water’s of Clifty Falls in Madison.
Marjorie will be missed by her loving sister, Betty June Shelton of Greenwood; her brother-in-law, Bill Olds (Darlene) of Vevay; her niece and caregivers, Sharon Riedel (Don) of Madison, Brenda Huntington (Bud) of Versailles; and 16 nieces and nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin and Marian Alice “Minnie” Gunnion Reed; her husband of 44 years, Harold Eugene “Gene” Olds died May 12, 1996; her daughter, Vickie Ann Olds died in 2005; her son, Michael Reed Olds died in 1980; her sisters, Wilma Reed and Freda Thornton; and her brothers, David Reed and Raymond Reed.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, Sept. 3, by Pastor Mike Cantrell at the Versailles Baptist Church in Versailles. Burial was in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Clofus Jones
Clofus Jones, 86, of Versailles, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014, at his home. He was born near Barboursville in Knox County, Kentucky, on September 29, 1927, the son of John and Phema Grills Jones. He was married to Marjorie Whitham and she preceded him in death on August 7, 1992.
Survivors include his daughter-in-law Barbara Jones and his grandson Kenneth Jones both of Sunman; one brother Grover (Joan) Jones of Canaan; four sisters Ethel Mills of Versailles, Flora Cooper of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Hazel Randolph and Bessie Clipp both of Jeffersonville.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, sons David Jones and Clofus Wayne Jones, brothers Otis, Arnold, Shelby, Ernest, Garnet, and Clifton Jones, and his sisters Effie Day and Thelma Jones.
Mr. Jones farmed his entire life and was a former employee of Seagram's in Lawrenceburg as well as the Madison State Hospital. He was an Army veteran, serving as a Corporal from 1946 to 1948 with the 1537th AAF, and he received the WWII Victory Medal.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 1 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Mike Cantrell of the Versailles Baptist Church officiating. Burial was in the Salem Cemetery near Cross Plains. Memorials may be given to the Salem Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
Virginia M. Shook
Virginia M. Shook, 86, of Osgood, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014, at her home. She was born in the Rush Branch community of Jennings County, in what is now the Jefferson Proving Ground, on September 30, 1927, the daughter of William and Alvina Jantzen Schonfeld. She was married to Roscoe Shook on November 12, 1948 and he preceded her in death on June 29, 1998.
Survivors include three daughters, Wanda Shook of Osgood, Libby (Jeff) Updike of Greentown, and Donna (Steve) Shade of Trinity, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Tera Beverly of Kokomo, Kimberly Updike of Greentown, and Adam Shade and William Shade both of Trinity; one great-grandson Landon Sweat. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her grandson Barry Beverly, her brother Harry Schonfeld, and her sister Viola Schonfeld.
Mrs. Shook was a 1946 graduate of Osgood High School and was a clerical worker for the Jefferson Proving Ground.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 2 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial was in the Cliff Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
