South Ripley Raiders boys and girls
Varsity soccer teams trek to Silver Creek

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

The Saturday, August 23, twin billed South Ripley Raider Varsity Boys and Varsity Lady Raider soccer team’s competitions at Silver Creek HS concluded with far from ever anticipated results and circumstances. An extremely warm day with little shade to find comfort in while awaiting their opportunity to begin, the Lady Raider team found resting nearly impossible.

The Raider boys played to a mere one point deficit, trailing by the final horn’s sounding to hosting Silver Creek 1-2. Basically spent, just from waiting in the exhausting heat under a tent, the Lady Raiders were called into action near the 1:30 p.m. mark. What was not scheduled was the demanding dehydrating heat’s reaction on them over the long bus ride and three hour wait until their game time.

The first 40 minute half of play, even with multiple substitutions and a 20 minute water break, it became obvious that completing the game was quite unlikely. A knee injury had shortened the Lady Raiders team options by one player and with 20 minutes left to play, another collapsed on the field. While she was taken to the ER by her mother and was being attended to, the bus pulled in with another in need of attention and soon thereafter, four more players were taken to the hospital with each one released as they recovered. Once cleared, the assistant coaches took the bus with other players back to SRHS, while head coaches John Brison and David Baugh stayed at the hospital. The hospital staff acknowledged the Raiders boys cooperative efforts to do all they could to help out. Doctors told coaches it’s great to hydrate during the game, but it takes eight hours for it to affect you; so, hydrating prior to the game is very key.

One mother noted “This experience has helped these young adults realize sports aren’t just about winning or losing, it’s creating leadership, developing trust and working together.”
