Delmar L. Smith

Delmar L. Smith, 87, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Versailles Fire & Rescue in Versailles. He was born March 26, 1927, at Broadhead, Kentucky, the son of Russell and Fannie Brummett Smith. He was united in marriage on October 15, 1960, to Patricia Ruth Brandon and she preceded him in death on June 7, 2013.

Survivors include daughter, Debra Walker (Jerry) of Versailles; stepson, Terry Stout (Deborah) of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren: Michelle Workman, Malinda “Mindy” Scott (B.J.), Kinsey Stout, Dakota Walker (Kristen); great-grandchildren: Mitchell and Matthew Workman, Rylee Stout, Blaine Inman, Averie and Kenley Scott; brother-in-law, David Brandon (Sherry) of Madison; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 52 years, his stepson Michael Stout, his sisters Vivian and Marie; his brothers Millard, Virgil, Alfred, Alvin, Johnny and Albert Smith; and his nephew Jonathan Brandon.

Delmar spent his early life in Kentucky and later in Cincinnati, Ohio. He and his four brothers owned and operated a chicken farm near Butlerville for several years. Delmar then built the Smith Feed Mill, south of Versailles and operated it until 1973. Delmar enjoyed playing the guitar in his early years, hunting, fishing, riding snow mobiles, boating, and traveling across the United States. He was known for his quick wit and humor. He will be missed by his family and close friends. Delmar was of the Christian faith and had held membership in the Masonic Lodge and the Versailles Lion’s Club.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 16, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, with Pastor Brian Teater officiating. Burial was in the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Memorials may be given to the Our Hospice, contribution cards are available at the funeral home.

Steven Jay “Irwin” O’Neal

Steven Jay “Irwin” O’Neal, 59, of Patriot, Indiana, died Sunday morning, July 13, 2014, at University of Cincinnati Hospital. Steve was born on September 16, 1954 in Milan, the son of Barbara and Harold O’Neal and was the second of six children.

Steve was raised as a member of Hebron Baptist Church and was baptized there. He graduated from Madison Consolidated High School’s class of 1973 where he was a member of the football, wrestling and track teams. He was a member of the school choir and was featured in “Jean” at the 1970 “Spring Fantasy” concert. He served in Germany as a member of the United States Army. He was a proud, dedicated member of the American Legion, Post No. 9. Steve was an avid collector of antiques, which he learned from his grandparents.

Steve is survived by his son James, and his wife Allison; his son, Jeremy and his wife Addie; and his daughter, Emily and her husband Tim, all of Madison; by his mother, Barbara Irwin Ritz of Belhaven, N.C.; his five siblings, Dennis O’Neal, Marty Irwin and his wife Joyce, Rick Irwin and his wife Cheryl, LuAnn Wonneberg and her husband Jerry, Stuart O’Neal and his wife Judy, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Addie and Clay Bishop of Elrod and Chelsea; and many dogs.
