It’s not the typical running gear you see at races. But then this wasn’t a typical 5K, nor were these typical runners…not yet! Wearing rainbow colored hair, tutus, moustaches, animal hats, capes and colorful leggings, the girls took to the Batesville streets in 20 degree weather to run a little over three miles .It started at the Batesville Knights of Columbus hall on Delaware Road and weaved through some downtown streets and Brum Woods.

The non-competitive run was the culmination of a 10-week program for third to fifth graders in the area. Teams from Batesville, Jac-Cen-Del, South Ripley, Sunman, Milan, St. Mary’s in Greensburg, Greensburg, North and South Decatur have been meeting twice a week. As the GOTR mission states: “We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running." The local group began in 2003. GOTR organizer Lynn Hertel noted it’s probably the biggest 5K in Batesville. There were 207 girls, 255 running buddies, 50 coaches and 125 volunteers to encourage the girls before, after and along the route. There were also hundreds of spectators. Suspect from Westport
Arrest may be tied to Versailles break-ins
A traffic stop in Batesville that later ended in an arrest appears to be the same person allegedly responsible for the 20 vehicle break-ins that occurred on the southside of Versailles Nov. 10.
Batesville Police stopped a vehicle at the intersection of State Roads 46 and 229 at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, November 15.
During the stop, Batesville Sgt. Danny Hamilton suspected illegal drugs were in the vehicle and ran his K9 partner Jinx around the vehicle, according to a news release from the Batesville Police. Jinx alerted on the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed drug paraphernalia. The officer also noticed firearms, ammunition and computers along with an unusual amount of change in the vehicle. The driver was identified as Paul Smith, 20, and the passenger as Daniel Smith, 25, both from Westport, Indiana. No arrest was made at that time; however, later that morning Batesville Police Department began receiving numerous reports of vehicles and garages in town being broken into, with the reports very similar to the Versailles thefts.
The Ripley County Sheriff’s Office later informed Batesville Police they were investigating thefts from vehicles in the Millhousen area on Saturday morning as well. State police also investigated similar recent thefts. Investigators obtained a search warrant for Smith’s home in Westport, in southwestern Decatur County. The search turned up stolen guns, ammunition, computers and heroin. Versailles Town Marshal Joe Mann said he had strong suspicions these are the same two responsible for the rash of break-ins. He went to Westport to help with the investigation.
“It’s one example of several agencies working together to solve a crime,. Decatur County, Westport police, the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Batesville and Greensburg police and Versailles,” Mann commented. He also added it’s another example of someone outside the county coming here to commit a felony crime.
Daniel Smith was arrested in Decatur County on preliminary charges of Possession of a Narcotic Drug (Level 6 felony) and Possession of Firearm by a Felon (Level 5 felony). Batesville Police is working with Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel to file potential charges
