Grover Jones

Grover Jones, 85, of Canaan, near Pleasant, died Sunday, October 26, 2014, at his home. He was born on October 11, 1929 in Barboursville, Kentucky, the son of the late John and Phema Grills Jones. Grover was united in marriage on October 15, 1955 to JoAnn Poling in Madison, who survives.

Other survivors include daughters, Patty Jones of Madison, Teresa Ferguson of Madison; grandsons, Brenden, Joel and Alex Ferguson; sisters, Ethel Mills of Versailles, Hazel Randolph and Bessie Clipp of Jeffersonville, Flora Cooper of Greensboro, North Carolina; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Thelma Jones and Effie Day; brothers, Garrett, Clifton, Otis, Shelby, Ernest, Clofus, and Arnold Jones.

Mr. Jones resided most of his life in Jefferson and Switzerland counties. He was inducted into the United States Army and rose to the rate of Private First Class. He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1961, at Fort Benjamin Harrison.
Grover farmed all of his life, fifty of those years on his current farm in Switzerland County. He was a member of the Indiana/Kentucky Carpenters Union and worked construction retiring after many years of service. He had worked many years with Dunlap Construction in Columbus. He was a member of the Concord Wesleyan Church in Benham and the NRA. Grover enjoyed hunting coons, deer, and squirrels. He also loved to catfish, being outdoors, woodworking, listening to bluegrass and the Gaithers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 11 a.m., by Pastor Jerry Vandervort at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison. Interment will follow in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

A final salute will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home, by Jefferson Post 9, of the American Legion. Full military honors will be conducted on Wednesday at the graveside by Versailles American Legion Post 173. Memorials may be made to the Concord Wesleyan Church. Walter E. Kieffer

Walter E. Kieffer, 86, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at Ripley Crossing at Milan. Walter was born Sunday, October 30, 1927, in New Marion, the son of John and Margaret (Kieffer) Kieffer. He married June Hamblin Kieffer who survives.

Walter served his country in the Army during the occupation of Japan near the end of WWII. He was a former employee of 37 years at the Jefferson Proving Ground and attended the St. John’s Catholic Church at Osgood. He loved the outdoors, and walking in the woods.

Walter is survived by his wife June Kieffer; daughters Theresa (Ben) Eadler, Elaine (Robert) Vollmer, and Peggy (Wayne) Borchelt all of Osgood; grandchildren, Heather Iyer, Christopher Eadler, Matthew and Stephen Borchelt, Adam Vollmer, Jenni Fletcher, and Justin Kieffer; great grandchildren, Michael, Brady and Isabelle Fletcher, Nikhil, Shemsidin and Madeleine Iyer, Quinn and Cameron Eadler; and McKayla and Jaxon Kieffer. He was preceded in death by brothers Paul, David, Arthur, and Martin Kieffer and sisters Lucille Colley and Geneva Westmeyer.

Funeral mass was held Friday, October 24, at St. Charles Catholic Church, Milan, with Fr. Frank Eckstein officiating. Burial with full military rites followed in Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Elsie Connelly

Elsie Connelly, 100, of Holton, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014, at the Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus. She was born in the Marble Corner Community southwest of New Marion in what is now the Jefferson Proving Ground on March 1, 1914, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Glenora Adam Dilk. She was married to Russell Connelly on November 30, 1933 and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1970.

Survivors include her sister-in-law Ruby Dilk of Columbus; nephews Gary Dilk of Coventry, Connecticut and Jerry Dilk of Phoenix, Arizona; nieces Karen Bowles of Ft. Myers, Florida, Sharron Staab of Oxford, Ohio, and Patty Baston of Hamilton, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her son Gerald Connelly, and her brothers Dale Dilk and Raymond Dilk.

Mrs. Connelly was a former employee of Lemen’s Store in Holton as well as the Holton Sundries. Elsie was a 65-year member of the Holton United Methodist Church where she served as the pianist and was church treasurer for over 32 years. She was also a member of the Gideon’s Auxiliary and the Indiana Retired Teachers.

Graveside services were held on Monday, October 27, at the Marble Corner Cemetery in Versailles with Rev. Dennis Hadler of the Holton United Methodist Church officiating. Memorials may be given to the Holton United Methodist Church in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Ronald Eugene Watson, Jr.

Ronald Eugene Watson, Jr., age 45, of Osgood, Indiana, passed away October 20, 2014, at his home. He was born February 8, 1969, in Davenport, Iowa. He was the son of Ronald Eugene and the late Lillan Dorothy Parker Watson. Most recently, he had worked at the Osgood Grub Company. Survivors include his father, two sons Tyler and Nicholas Anderson of Knoxville, Tennessee; and one sister, Renee Ross of Osgood. One grandson, Tanner Anderson also survives.
