Organized in 1989, funding generated allowed a single, college-assisted scholarship to be awarded the first year. Community and area business support along with voluntary fundraising efforts over the years has proudly allowed the MHSSF to manifest into a viable source of assets for eligible, qualified students to apply. In 2013, the Foundation was required by Scholarship America to change their name to something that included Dollars for Scholars, so that all chapters were uniform across the country; therefore, their title is now Milan Community Dollars for Scholars.

Because of the Milan community generosity, in 2013, 44 scholarships were awarded to 34 students. In total, since 1989, they have awarded over $373,000 to over 540 students. Those who attended the event represented 14 of 25 years since the inception of the program. Hopes are with this first recognition honoring recipients under their belt, the word will get out and more will make time to return for future expos.

Hindering some who had planned on appearing, the impending storm on Sunday sent many of the current college kids back to school early on Saturday to beat the storm. Organizers noted that “overall we were pleased with the turnout.”
