Lawrence W. Green
Lawrence W. Green, 101, of Versailles, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Ripley Crossing in Milan. He was born near Cross Plains on September 10, 1912, the son of John and Anna West Green. He was married to Mari Jo Maxwell on April 23, 1938 and she preceded him in death on July 12, 1989.Survivors include two sons John (Phyllis) Green of Cincinnati, and David (Ruth) Green of Versailles; 5 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his brother Howard Green.
Mr. Green was a 1930 graduate of Versailles High School. He farmed his entire life and was a former employee of Guide Lamp in Anderson and the Versailles ASCS office. Lawrence was a member of and served in several capacities at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean. He was also a 63-year member of the Versailles Lions Club where he was given a lifetime membership and also received the W. P. Woods Award.
He was a member and past president of the Ripley County Farm Bureau, a past director for the Ripley County Farm Bureau Co-op, had served on the Ripley County Election Board, and was a member of the first Ripley County Planning Commission.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Dennis Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Improvement Fund of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Lawrence Green Scholarship, or the Activities Fund at Ripley Crossing in care of the funeral home.
Eva M. Mess
Eva M. Mess, 95, of Batesville and formerly of Pierceville, passed away Sunday December 22, 2013, at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville. Eva was born March 4, 1918, in Pierceville, the daughter of Earl and Rosa Belle (Lewis) Knowlton. She married Joseph Mess September 6, 1941 who preceded her in death September 27, 1999.Eva was a homemaker, and belonged to the Pierceville United Methodist Church. She liked to sing with her twin sister Neva. She played the violin, guitar, mandolin at dances and competitions with Neva. She loved spending time with her sister Neva, and many friends and family.
She is survived by son Jack (Sandy) Mess of Milan; daughter Donna (Fred) Jebens of Cincinnati, OH; sister Neva Hinners of Batesville; eight grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan with Tito Pel officiating. Burial will be in Cravens Cemetery south of Milan. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
