Attendance at the Ripley County Lincoln Day Dinner held Wednesday, February 17 was at an all time high with enthusiasm to match as guest speaker US Congressman Mike Pence (R) from District 6 took the podium.

 

County Commissioners hear from bridge inspection companies at meeting

Representatives from two engineering firms presented information regarding their bridge inspection services to the Ripley County Commissioners at the regular meeting on Monday, February 22. Leo Rumschlag, Rumschlag Technical Services is an independent engineer who has been completing bridge inspections for the past eight years throughout the state.

In just his second year as sponsor and coach of the newly established South Ripley Raider Bowling Team, Coach Ron Pollard has led team member Marty Porter, a junior at South Ripley, to an elite position at the top - 2010 State Champion Bowler.

The primary election for 2010 is shaping up with several Democrat (D) and Republican (R) choices for voters to choose from.

At the state level several have signed on the ticket for United States Representative for the Ninth District. Those include:

Osgood teen taken to jail following crash

State troopers investigated a crash Monday morning about 7:25 a.m. that involved three vehicles.

The crash occurred on State Road 129 just south of State Road 350 in Delaware, according to information from Public Information Officer Sgt. Noel Houze of the Indiana State Police.


Jac-Cen-Del gears up for ISTEP testing


The Jac-Cen-Del Elementary is preparing for the ISTEP testing, reported Travis Rohrig, sixth grade instructor, at the regular board meeting on Wednesday, February 17. Rohrig said students and staff are ready to go “over the top” to improve their testing scores.

Fields will be ready to play ball!

Jeff Cumberworth of the Versailles Sports Complex Park Board updated the Versailles Town Council on progress being made at the regular meeting on Thursday, February 11. According to Cumberworth, Phase I of the project, which includes three of the four planned ball fields, is completed with the board looking at bids for the construction of soccer fields and the fourth ball field is in the second phase of the project.

Four fire departments respond
Fire destroys Delaware home

A fire that destroyed a home in Delaware is under investigation, according to Delaware Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Ron Bushhorn.

Firefighters responded to a call at 10:38 p.m. Monday, February 8, to find a home at 2867 E. State Road 350, fully engulfed in flames. It is uncertain if anyone was home at the time of the fire.

Community invited to special Project Lead the Way event at JCD

A presentation about Project Lead the Way, a program that has changed academics at Jac-Cen-Del High School, is being offered to parents, students and the entire community next Monday, February 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the high school cafeteria.

According to Principal Johnny Budd, the program has exceeded any of his expectations and has truly changed the learning process for students at JCD. “The students will tell you the program is tough, hard and yet their favorite,” Budd told The Versailles Republican.

A recent announcement from the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) noted that Ripley County’s 2010 budget order and tax rates have been certified.

UCB to acquire local Integra branches

According to a joint announcement by United Community Bank (UCB) and Integra, the branches of Integra in Ripley County will be purchased by UCB. The three branches are located in Versailles, Milan, and Osgood. The announcement also noted that UCB has agreed to acquire a group of commercial and residential mortgage loans from Integra.

Surprise visit from police results in several arrests

Warrants were issued last Wednesday, January 27 and by the end of the night several people were in police custody due to alleged illegal prescription drug activity.

According to court records, eight arrests were made that night, with three suspects still at large. Several police agencies have been working in conjunction toward the arrests saying the abuse of prescription drugs is rampant in Ripley County.

Inmate violates Judge's order multiple times

A domestic dispute last August landed an Osgood man in the hospital, then in jail, and now in more hot water with a consistent violation of the Judge’s No Contact Order.

This stemmed from an incident where Clifford “Doc” Winters of Osgood, is accused of being involved in a violent domestic dispute, then shooting himself before he could be taken into police custody. He was airlifted by PHI to University Hospital in Cincinnati, according to Ripley Publishing Co. files.

Sheriff cautions residents to be alert, keep doors locked


Last week (Wednesday, January 27), a residential entry on County Road 400 West had police responding after they were called around 3:30 p.m.

According to Sheriff Tom Grills he responded along with ISP Trooper Robert Garcia to find the suspect had gained entry to the home by sliding an object into the door to move the latch. There was no bolt lock on the door.
