Irene M. Barnhorst
Irene M. Barnhorst, age 99, of Batesville, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in Helena, Montana. Born October 29, 1917 in New Alsace, Indiana, she is the daughter of Catherine (Nee: Hoffbauer) and Louis Fritsch. She married Herman Barnhorst April 6, 1940, at St. Paul’s Church in New Alsace and he preceded her in death May 8, 2006.
A homemaker, Irene worked part-time at the Napoleon Locker Plant for 20 years and was a member of St. Louis Church.
Her family indicated that mom never met a stranger and that she loved having company and talking on the telephone. She was also a terrific cook and baker. They remember the smell of homemade bread frequently filling the house and will miss her fried chicken, corn, German potato salad, and her homemade noodles. The church festival will miss her pies, cakes and coleslaw. For years, she put out a large garden and canned the excess each year. Irene also enjoyed eating out. Her favorite spots were the Hobo Hut and the Brau House, and with someone else doing the cooking, she liked attending the local church festivals for their fried chicken. When it was time to relax, she watched I.U. basketball or the Lawrence Welk Show.
Irene is survived by her sons Raymond Barnhorst of Columbus, Paul Barnhorst of Helena, Montana, Robert Barnhorst of Cincinnati, Ohio, Gerald Barnhorst of Edinburg; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is also preceded in death by sister Rita Abplanalp, brothers Stanley and Alfred Fritsch, and grandchild Brian Barnhorst.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 13, from 5-8 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 14, at St. Maurice Church in Napoleon with Rev. Bill Turner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the St. Maurice Cemetery Fund or the Hospice of St. Peter’s. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, is entrusted with arrangements.
Barbara Jean Sanford
Barbara Jean Sanford, age 82, of Osgood, passed away early Thursday morning, January 5, 2017 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was the daughter of the late DeAlton and Ruth Norman Sanford, born September 14, 1934 in Monterey, California.
Barbara lived most of her life in the Chicago area. There she had worked many years as a bookkeeper for Kay Fagg who owned a local cosmetology business. After her health began declining in early 2013, she was brought to Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood, to be near her sister, Shirley Buck.
She became a member of the Holy Family Church in Watertown, New York. During her life in Chicago, she had developed a great love for the Chicago Cubs and other sports as well. Under the direction of Shawn Negangard of Manderley, she actually got to attend a baseball game at Cincinnati between the Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds! Among other things that she had enjoyed in her life was music. She had a talent that she was able to sit down at a piano and actually play a song by ear! Family and friends knew when they went to see Barbara, she may talk to them in an abrupt way or be gentle as a lamb! That was just Barbara. She will be sadly missed by the employees at Manderley along with her sister Shirley and family.
Survivors include sisters: Shirley (Don) Buck of Osgood and Carroll Reid of FL; brother: Billy Sanford of FL; and many nieces and nephews survive. Two brothers preceded her in death, DeAlton and James Sanford.
A memorial service mass was held Saturday, January 7 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Osgood. Memorials may go to Our Hospice of Jennings County, Indiana. www.nealsfuneralhome.net. Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, was entrusted with arrangements.
