Howard C. Ankenbauer

Howard C. Ankenbauer, 84, of Cross Plains, passed away Thursday evening, October 25, 2012 at his home. Howard was born in Cincinnati, OH, on March 23, 1928, the son of Howard J. Ankenbauer and Esther Stentz Ankenbauer.

Howard graduated from North College Hill High School. On August 6, 1949 he married Evelyn Joyce Blackburn and she preceded him in death on August 5, 2009.

Howard was employed at Proctor & Gamble-Miami Valley Laboratories for over 30 years as a research machinist, and was accredited with multiple patents while employed at P&G.

Following his retirement, Howard and Evelyn moved to Cross Plains, where they enjoyed their hobbies of hunting, fishing, and rifle shooting. Howard was an excellent marksman, and shared this knowledge as he served in the National Guard as a firearm instructor and later in the NRA. He was a Golden Eagle, and enjoyed engraving as well as wood carving as he created muzzleloaders and knives. He enjoyed flying and earned his private pilot's license. Howard taught his children facts about nature and respect for life and all of God's creatures.

Surviving are his three children, Mark Ankenbauer, Cheryl Ankenbauer-Ruehl, and Lynn Ankenbauer-Bolin (Steven), all residing in Cincinnati, OH; six grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great grandson; one brother, Clyde Ankenbauer; and his close neighbors and personal friends, Chris and Clint Giltner.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m. at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro, with Pastor Charles Hill officiating. Friends may meet his family on Thursday at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the National Rifle Association. DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro, is entrusted with arrangements.

Keith Hunger

Keith Hunger, 78, of Versailles, passed away Friday, October 26, 2012 at his home. He was born near Benham on May 5, 1934 the son of Willard and Roberta Steele Hunger. He was married to Ruth Swingle on May 12, 1956 and she survives.

Other survivors include two sons Ken Hunger and friend Tim Moore of Columbus, Ohio, and Gary (Annette) Hunger of Greensburg; two daughters Brenda (David) Goerlitz of Jeffersonville and Ellen (Larry) Siebert of Batesville; grandchildren Philip (Erin) Baker of Connersville, Emily (Corey) McDarment of Madison, Madelyn and Clay Hunger, and Clare Siebert; great grandchildren Payton and Grayden McDarment; three brothers Donald (Polly) Hunger of Versailles, Ernest Lee (Kay) and Larry (Esther) Hunger both of Benham; three sisters Anita Mae (David) Giltner of Middlebury, Karen (Ramon) Sauley of Hanover, and Becky Hunger of Louisville; sister-in-law Eileen (Frank) LaGreca of Dillsboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Paul Hunger.

Mr. Hunger was a 1952 graduate of Cross Plains High School and served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959. He was a self-employed truck driver from 1959 until his retirement in June of this year.

Keith was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Olean.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Dennis Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Improvement Fund or the Hospice of Kings Daughters Hospital in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.

Sherry Lynn Carter Merida

Sherry Lynn Carter Merida, 59, of Corbin, KY, passed away October 19, 2012 at her home. She is preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Merida, her father Donald Lee Carter and a brother Ronnie Wade Carter.

She is survived by her mother, Phyllis Wright Carter Norman of Greendale; sister Vicky Carter Carpenter of Corbin, brother Danny Joe Carter of Moores Hill; three sons, Donald Merida of Dillsboro, Michael Merida of Rising Sun and Rodney Merida of Osgood; and six grandchildren.

She was a native of Ripley County and employed by Margaret Mary Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, at Holt Missionary Baptist Church in Dillsboro with Pastor Tom Holt officiating with a pitch-in dinner immediately following the service. Burial service will be held on Sunday, November 4 at 2 p.m. at Cravens Cemetery in Milan with Pastor Rick Watson officiating. Burial donations will be greatly appreciated.

Cynthia Lynn "Cindy" Sawyer

Cynthia Lynn "Cindy" Sawyer, 44, of Dillsboro, passed away Friday, October 26, 2012. Opal M. Miller Smith

Opal M. Miller Smith, 85, of Madison, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at The Water's of Clifty Falls, Madison. She was born on November 11, 1926 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, the daughter of McCoy and Thelma Keeton Miller. She married Walter T. Smith on November 22, 1947 and he preceded her in death on December 1, 1999.

Survivors include three sons, David (Diana) Smith, Darrell (Shelley) Smith and Donald (Rulena) Smith, all of Madison; five brothers, Rudean (Evelyn) Miller of Osgood, Chavis (Bonnie) Miller, Johnie (Donna) Miller, Grover (Cathy) Miller, all of Versailles, and Charles (Ann) Miller of Osgood; four sisters, Reva Mullins, Helen (Gene) Bauman, both of Osgood, Janet (Ralph) Thompson of North Vernon, Susan (Joe) Owens of Osgood; one sister-in-law, Mary Alice Miller of Osgood; grandchildren, Dana, Dari, Dawn, Duane, Kayla, Deron, Aaron and Trent; great grandchildren, Olivia, Austin, Jenna, DayLee and Noah; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Randy Thomas Smith who died in 1958; her brothers, Henry Clay Miller who died October 26, 1932 and Gray "Bub" Miller who died July 15, 2009; and her brother-in-law Nathan Mullins.

Mrs. Smith farmed with her late husband in Jefferson County. She was a faithful member of the Macedonia Baptist Church and the Macedonia ABW. She resided in Jefferson County the past 54 years. She enjoyed time spent with her family and friends.

Ruth Ralston Stegemiller

Ruth Ralston Stegemiller, 91 of Greenwood, passed away Thursday, October 25, 2012 at her home.

Mrs. Stegemiller was a talented seamstress and quiltmaker, creating clothing, household goods and intricate heirlooms for her large family. She also was well-known for her baking skills, and enjoyed preserving fruits and vegetables from an ample home garden. She was the daughter of Jessie Carnine and Clarence Ralston, she was born near Pleasant, on Oct. 13, 1921 and was a 1939 graduate of Vevay High School. She was the widow of Herbert Stegemiller, who died in 2005. Ruth and Herbie were married for 55 years and raised seven children.

Mrs. Stegemiller was a secretary for many years in Perry Township schools, manning the front desk at Lincoln and Winchester Village elementary schools.

Ruth was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard Women's Reserve, also known as the SPARS. She served from 1943 to 1946, working as a clerk at Coast Guard headquarters in Washington, D.C.

She is survived by her children (and their spouses) Susan Hoffman (Charlie) of Greensburg, Mary Pendleton (Mike) of Orlando, FL, Ruthie Magary (Mike) of Evansville, Lisa Peake (Gordon) of Alto, N.M., Priscilla Lawler (Ed) of Chicago; Matt Stegemiller (Jane) of Indianapolis; and Andy Stegemiller (Lyn) of North Liberty; sister, Mary Geyman; two brothers, Dillman Ralston and Earl Ralston; 19 grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce Ralston and Lawrence Ralston.

Services were held on Monday, Oct. 29, at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery.

Raymond Leroy Weaver

Raymond Leroy Weaver, 65, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, in Gilbert, AZ. He was born May 22, 1947 in Crescentville, Ohio. For the last nine years Raymond spent the winters with his sister in Arizona, and the summers with his daughters in Indiana.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Andy Fisher, and his grandsons, Brian Weaver and Kaleb Fisher, all of Frazeysburg, OH; his daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and Nick Demaree, and grandson, Dominic, of Holton; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Kenna Weaver, of El Paso, TX; and his sister and brother-in-law, Gerri and Don Davis, of Chandler, AZ. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Weaver, his father, Thomas Weaver, and his mother Christine "Bessie" Sanders Weaver.

A memorial service will be held at Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles, on Saturday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m., where he will be buried next to his mother and grandparents.

Dorothy Marie Meinders

Dorothy Marie Meinders, 81, of Milan passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Heritage House in Greensburg. She was born November 7, 1930 in Milan, the daughter Charles F. Lula (Grothman) Meinders. She graduated in 1948 from Milan High School. She was of the Jehovah Witness faith.

Dorothy is survived by brother Donald Meinders of Milan; sister Alethea Meinders of Milan; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 25 at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will follow in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Lawrence "Bud" Smith

Lawrence "Bud" Smith, 77, of Osgood, passed away Monday, October 22, 2012 at the Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. He was born at Freeport in Shelby County on January 28, 1935, the son of Raymond and Leona Myer Smith. He was married to Valerie Brewington on August 6, 1965 and she preceded him in death on June 29, 2006.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Smith of Holton and Scott (Denise) Smith of Sunman; three daughters, Sherry (Dave) Wunar, Sheryl Smith and Sheila Vega all of Chicago; nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister, Zella Wyatt of Greensburg; and one brother, Robert (Clara) Smith of Holton. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Evelyn Comer.

Mr. Smith attended Holton High School and was a 65-year member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. Lawrence was a farmer and had worked with the Batesville Furniture Factory and was employed for 45 years with Bonn Aluminum in Greensburg.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 25 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Pastor Charles Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Hopewell Cemetery. Peggy Burford

Peggy Burford, 78, of Milan passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati. She was born in Cincinnati on Aug. 12, 1934, the daughter of Rev. Lee and Rose Meeks Barenscheer. She was married to Charles Burford on April 12, 1953 and he preceded her in death on July 6, 2008.

Survivors include one son Rick (Karen) Burford of Elrod; five daughters, Barbara (Dennis) McLaughlin of Versailles, Judy Russell and Cheri (Jr.) Schutte both of Milan, Debbie (John) Eaglin of Elrod, and Amy (Scott) Stutler of Friendship; 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren; and one brother Andy (Linda) Barenscheer of Milan.Mrs. Burford was a 1952 graduate of Taylor High School in Cleves, Ohio and was a homemaker. Peggy was a member of the Washington Baptist Church in Elrod.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Bro. Don Burford, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Washington Cemetery at Elrod. Memorials may be given to the Washington Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Gerald D. Williams

Gerald D. Williams, 74, of Holton, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in the Flat Rock community near Osgood on February 24, 1938, the son of Glenn and Martha Rayburn Williams. He was married to Carolyn Schlotman on September 12, 1954 and she survives.

Other survivors include three sons Mark (Jana) Williams of Edinburg, Steve (Beth) Williams of Nashville, Tennessee, and Andy (Theresa) Williams of Greensburg; two daughters Beth Hewitt of Batesville and Lisa (Denny) Granger of Columbus; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; one brother Milford (Carol) Williams of Bennington; two sisters Beverly (Chuck) Newlin of Osgood, and Carolyn (John) Newlin of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Sue Rice.

Mr. Williams was a graduate of Holton High School. He was a 30-year employee of Cummins Engine in Columbus retiring in 1997 and had worked until 2010 at Gecom in Greensburg. Gerald was a member of the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 16 at 11 a.m. at the Union Flat Rock Baptist Church with Bro. Malvin McCullough officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Melvin "Barney: Burger, Jr., 68, of Batesville, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012.  Funeral services were held Sat., Oct. 6 at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville with Mark Tanner officiating. Wanda S. Rutledge Dunaway

Wanda S. Rutledge Dunaway, 71, of Madison, passed away Fri., Oct. 5, 2012.  Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. at the North Madison Baptist Church, Madison. Robert A. Wettering

Robert A. Wettering, 76, of Milan, passed away, Wed., Oct. 3, 2012 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville. Robert was born Thurs., April 23, 1936 in Batesville the son of Joseph and Stella (Youngman) Wettering. He married Joan Morgan Wettering June 16, 1978 and she preceded him in death Sept. 5, 2011.

Bob was a veteran having served his country in the US Marines, was a retired employee of Batesville Casket Co., a member of the Milan American Legion Post #235, and was of the Catholic faith.

He loved his fishing, building model boats, dollhouses, trains, etc. He was an avid dog lover, and was the family ‘dog sitter'. He also loved bird watching, and most of all spending time with his family.

He is survived by daughters, Nicole (Jeff) Dickman of Napoleon, Janice (Ron) Pruss of Milan, Gwen Honaker of Lawrenceburg, Rosanna (Roland) Peek of California, and son Reggie (Charlene) Honaker of Patriot; brother Leon Wettering of Batesville, sisters Rosie Fullenkamp of Oldenburg, and Sally Miller of Florida; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, brothers, Harry and Carl Wettering and sister Marie Bland.

Funeral services and visitation will be private at the convenience of the family.  Pastor Charles Miller will preside. Burial will be in the New Craven Cemetery at Milan.

Michael Ivan Cutter, 59, of Osgood (formerly of Rising Sun), passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012. Funeral services will be at Markland Funeral Home, Rising Sun, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2. Clayton R. Day

Clayton R. Day, 59, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at his home. He was born in Milan on April 16, 1953, the son of Harlan and Effie Jones Day.

Survivors include two daughters Amber (William) Moore of Franklin and Angela Minton of Shelbyville; six grandchildren; one sister Becky (Jerry) Hunteman of North Vernon; one brother Norman (Brenda) Day of Osgood. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Dexter, Wendell, and Denver, and his twin brother Clinton.

Mr. Day was a 1973 graduate of South Ripley High School. He was employed as a custodian for the Manderley Health Care Center and also Buckeye Village, both in Osgood. Clayton was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 1 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Dale Day and Chris Hunteman officiating. Burial was in the Shelby Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Shelby Cemetery or the Bethany Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.

Walter H. Kamman

Walter H. Kamman, 71 of Holton, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at his home. He was born near New Marion on May 28, 1941, the son of Walter and Leah Heitmeyer Kamman. He was married to Sarita Snedaker Wall on October 4, 1975 and she survives.

Other survivors include two sons Michael (Teresa) Kamman of Columbus and Christopher (Dawn) Kamman of Greenwood; 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and one sister Mary Thayer of Osgood. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother John Kamman, and his sisters Carolyn Kamman and Ruth Ann Swinney.

Mr. Kamman was a 1959 graduate of Osgood High School and was a member of the NRA. He had farmed, worked at Swinney's Farm Equipment in Versailles, and retired from Crum Trucking in 2008. Walter was a member of the Board of Directors of the Holton Water Corporation.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 22 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Irvin Hart of the New Testament Christian Church in Osgood officiating. Burial was in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the New Testament Christian Church in care of the funeral home.

Nancy Moody

Nancy Moody, 78 of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at her residence at McCormick's Creek in Spencer. She was born in Versailles on May 29, 1934, the daughter of Toney and Madaline Raney Moody.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Anthony Moody, and her sister Gwendolyn Moody.

Miss Moody was a 1952 graduate of Versailles High School. She had worked at US Shoe in Osgood and served as a custodian for the Versailles Post Office.

Nancy was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church and had served as the church's custodian for several years.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in the Cliff Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.

Margaret Neomi Roberts

Margaret Neomi Roberts, 86, of St. Petersburg, FL, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Bon Secor Nursing Center in St. Petersburg. Margaret was born in Dillsboro on September 18, 1926, the daughter of Ervin Cash and Nellie Waldon Cash. She was married to Willard Roberts and they were the parents of two sons, Willard (Gene) and Gregory.

Margaret resided in Lawrenceburg for several years before moving to St. Petersburg 25 years ago. While living in Lawrenceburg, Margaret was employed at Bilby & Fister Law Firm for 25 years. She was a member of Epsion Sigma Alpha Sorority, and served as Indiana State President. She enjoyed square dancing and attended many square dancing conventions.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Willard, who passed away in 2009. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Willard (Gene) Roberts, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Okeana, OH, and Gregory Roberts and his wife, Linda, of Cooper City, FL; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild; and sister Laverne Cutter of Dillsboro.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 5, at 12 noon at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro. Friends may meet her family at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Bon Secor Nursing Center in St. Petersburg for the fine care they rendered to Margaret during her stay there. Shirley M. Wainscott Sizemore

Shirley M. Wainscott Sizemore, 70 of Moores Hill, passed away at her home on Friday, September 28, 2012. Shirley was born January 23, 1942 in Cleves, Ohio, the daughter of Eugene and Teresa (Ipox) Wainscott. She was married to Marvin Sizemore August 29, 2003 and he survives.

Shirley had worked as a waitress for 42 years with Habige's and also the Trolley Tavern. She was a member of the Moores Hill Legion Auxiliary, liked gardening, her flowers, and loved her dogs, namely Sophie, Max, and Penny.

Shirley is survived by husband, Marvin, sons Thomas Lunsford of Miamitown, Steven of Moores Hill, brothers Donnie (Clara) Wainscott of Tampa, Florida, and James Wainscott of Rising Sun, half brothers Rick West and Jack Wainscott both of Tampa, Florida, several grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Offill.

Services were held Monday October 1 at Sibbett-Moore Funeral Home, Moores Hill with Pastor Charles Miller officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery at Cleves. Paul Edward Steuver

Paul Edward Steuver, 79, of Casa Grande, AZ, formerly of Dillsboro, passed away August 21, 2012 in Casa Grande.

Paul was a former math teacher in Dillsboro and Versailles and served his country in the US Air Force.

Surviving is his wife, Janet (Green) Steuver and four children, Paul Edward Steuver, Jr., Selena Faye Lucas, Lora Lee Hammond, and Mark David Steuver.

A graveside service of his cremains will be Saturday, October 6, at 1 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery, with Rev. Mike Dixon of Tyson Temple officiating. Military rites will be performed by the Versailles American Legion Post 173. Arrangements are entrusted to DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Dale Raymond Tunny

Dale Raymond Tunny, 73, of Osgood, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the Kentuckiana Medical Center in Clarksville. He was born August 31, 1939 in Napoleon, the son of James F. & Geneva Ida Hardebeck Tunny. He married Donna Sue Brooks March 1, 1960 at St. Maurice church in Napoleon, and she survives.

Dale was a member of the St. Maurice Catholic Church in Napoleon. He had served in the National Guard from 1957 until 1966. Dale had worked for Cummins Engine Company of Columbus, from 1964 until 1994. From 1995 to 2007, he drove a school bus for the Jac-Cen-Del School Corporation. He loved playing golf and also enjoyed fishing.

Other survivors include sons, Kevin & wife Naomi Tunny of Holton, Gary & wife Rhonda Tunny  of Napoleon, Robert & wife Margaret Tunny of Columbus; daughter, Kim & husband Randy King of Versailles; brothers, James & wife Sheila Tunny of Napoleon, Hubert & wife Brenda of Greensburg, Joe & wife Rose Tunny of Austin, Paul & wife Rhonda Tunny of Seymour; sisters, Amelia & Don Newhart of Osgood, Betty Jett of Greensburg; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas & Steve Tunny.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 1, at St. Maurice Church, Napoleon, with burial in the Greendale Cemetery, Osgood. Memorials may be given to the Diabetes Association. Arrangements were entrusted to Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood. www.neals-funeralhome.net
