Jeffery Alan Burton

Jeffery Alan Burton, 47 of Osgood, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born June 27, 1965 the son of Jerry Denver and Ellanora Franklin Burton.

Jeffery graduated from Jac-Cen-Del High School in Osgood. He served in the US Army as a Cargo Specialist. He was a member of the Osgood American Legion Post #267. After he served his country, he worked many years in construction and had been presently employed by a company from Cincinnati.

Jeffery was a member of the Osgood First Baptist Church. He enjoyed car racing, still board shooting, motorcycles, corn hole and cookouts. Most of all, Jeffery loved his family.

Survivors include his parents, Jerry D. and Ellanora Odetta Franklin Burton of Osgood; son, Brice Alan and wife Racheal Rene Burton of Hartsville; brothers, Ricky Lee and wife Rocio Burton of Fletcher, OK, Jerry Eugene and wife Connie Burton of Monticello; grandchild, Promise Burton; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Percy and Alice Burton and Walter and Rhoda Franklin.

Herbert E. Grubb, Jr.

Herbert E. Grubb, Jr., 79, of Osgood, passed away Thursday, September 20, 2012 at his home. He was born August 6, 1933 in Springfield, IL, the son of Ava (Nee: Manning) and Herbert Grubb, Sr. He married Mary Mischler on July 23, 1955 at St. Anthony's Church in Dayton, OH.

Herb served in the Air Force during the Korean War and after the service became vice president for K.W. Atwater Engineering and spent ten years as manager of the engine shop for Com-Air Airlines before retiring.

Herb enjoyed his vegetable garden and building boats for many years. He loved flying and scuba diving. Herbert and Mary enjoyed traveling with visits to Holland and Hawaii among their favorites.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Jean Marie Patterson of Evansville; sons, Herbert III of Miami, FL, Robert of Daleville, AL, David of Osgood, and Michael of Florence, KY; brothers Richard and Donald, both of Springfield, IL; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his son Richard, sister Patty Mae Grubb and grandson Jonathon Stoddard.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 25 at St. Louis Church in Batesville with his nephew Rev. Tom Mischler officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Batesville VFW Post #3183 and the Prell-Bland American Legion Post #271. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, at Calvary Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio. The family requests memorials to the Hospice of Margaret Mary Hospital. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, is entrusted with arrangements.

Paul L. Mack

Paul L. Mack, 81, of Dillsboro, passed away Saturday, September 22, 2012 at the Waters of Dillsboro. He is survived by his wife, Terrie Lynn Solis Mack. Services will be held later in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Arrangements are by DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro.

Shirley Melvinia Myers

Shirley M. Myers, 85 of Osgood, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born September 29, 1926 in Tazewell, TN to the parents of Harrison H. and Elsie L. Keck Hopper. She married Paul L. Myers and he preceded her in death on April 4, 2006.

In the middle 1940's, Shirley had worked at an Oak Ridge, TN factory where they were involved in the construction of the atomic bomb. Later, in the 1960's, she had worked in Richmond at the Mercury Record Factory. In the 1970's through the 1980's, she owned and operated the Le Curl Beauty Salon in Versailles. Later, she worked as a cosmetologist, for Manderley Health Care Center, in Osgood where she finally retired.

Shirley was a member of the Osgood First Baptist Church. In her later years, she attended the Osgood Nazarene Church.

Survivors include daughter, Vicki Ent (Tim Christman); three granddaughters, Holly (Joe) Turner of Osgood, Stefanie (Mike) Christie of the country Malta, Rachel (Cory) Dufrene of Osgood; eight great grandchildren, Jarod, Cameron, Jack, Caden, Alec, Jesse, Cole and Corbin; and many nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harley and Lee Vonnie Hopper; and four sisters,  Hazel Tolliver, Opal Kelley, Alma McNeely and Wilma Ping.

Services were held all in one day on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the Osgood Nazarene Church. Burial was in the Cravens Cemetery, Milan. Memorials may be given to the Osgood Nazarene Church, Osgood First Baptist Church or Manderley Activity Fund in care of Neal's Funeral Home, Osgood, who was entrusted with arrangements.

Ronald Curtis "Ronnie" Thornton

Ronald Curtis "Ronnie" Thornton, 69, of Vevay, passed away Monday, September 24, 2012 at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, Vevay.

R. Arthur Turner

R. Arthur Turner, 92, of Dillsboro, passed away Monday, September 24, 2012 at Dearborn County Hospital. He was born January 4, 1920 in Danville, IL, the son of John H. Turner and Myrtle Licking Turner.

Arthur graduated from Dillsboro High School in 1937. On January 12, 1942 he joined the US Army and served for 44 months during WWII, and was discharged September 12, 1945.

While in the Army, he married Edna Marie Bosse on May 5, 1942. They enjoyed traveling and playing cards and were married for 55 years when she passed in October of 1997.

Arthur was employed as a boiler operator at Seagrams for 43 years, retiring in 1984. He was on the board of Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro, board member of Dillsboro Village Apartments and a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Dillsboro, serving on the building committee, ushering and on several other committees. He was also a member of the VFW Post #10836 in Dillsboro, American Legion Post #292, the 50+ Club, Dillsboro Senior Citizens and AARP.

On May 30, 1998 Arthur married Glenna Cutter Kieninger, and they have enjoyed many happy years of marriage during his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna; two step daughters, Jean Acre of Greensburg and Beverly Stevens of Yorkville; two sisters, Grace Ann (Jack) Oak of Dillsboro, and Lois (Chuck) Stewart of Grove City, PA; four step grandchildren and three step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edna Bosse Turner; one brother, Louis Turner; and one sister, Hazel Sandbrink.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Dillsboro, with his pastor Rev. Richard Kolaskey officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 26 from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Oakdale Cemetery Trust Fund, Trinity Lutheran Church or the Indiana Lions Club Cancer Control Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Verna Louise Beatty

Verna Louise Beatty, 86, of Moores Hill, passed away Friday, Sept. 14, 2012 at the Dearborn County Hospital. She was bornin Dillsboro on Jan. 5, 1926 the daughter of Clifford Laaker and Rosa Kulhman Laaker and graduated from Dillsboro High School. She was married to Cecil Beatty on Oct. 22, 1961. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church from St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat.

Verna loved living on the farm and babysitting for many different families. She earned the nickname "Verna Bear" from everyone she babysat for. She loved the family farm, especially gardening, canning, baking, and doing crafts. Her many cats were a constant joy to her, and she enjoyed her many hobbies. Trinity Lutheran Church was very important to her and she was faithful in attendance.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Bonnie Beatty, who passed away on March 10, 2007; her sister, Ruth Hessel, and her husband, Cecil, who passed away July 16, 1988. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Beatty of Moores Hill; one sister, Esther Goldfuss of Cincinnati; and one brother, Virgil (Donna) Laaker of Dillsboro; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Kolaskey officiating. Internment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the family or to a charity of your choice.

John Leslie Cutter

John "Johnny" Leslie Cutter, 74, of Dillsboro, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2012 at the Dearborn County Hospital following a long illness. He was born in Milan on January 15, 1938 to Irvin Cutter and Lena Stevens Cutter and was a lifelong area resident.

He was a graduate from Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati with an engineering degree, and was employed at Reliance Electric-Exxon for 22 years. One of his greatest hobbies was fishing, and he was good at it. He loved working on cars and took that hobby to a business in Dillsboro, called Prime and Shine Body Shop, which he started in the early 1980's and kept for 21 years.

Johnny served his community as a volunteer fireman from the late 1970's until his health did not allow him to continue. He was a member of the S. Dearborn School Board from 1974-78, and was active at both Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Peters Lutheran Church in Dillsboro. He served for many years as treasurer of St. Peters Lutheran Church. He loved his guitar; he played in some small bands, by himself, and at the Dillsboro Civic Club. He became disabled in 1982, and his life changed. Johnny was loved and admired by many people in Dillsboro, and will be sorely missed.

His loving wife and partner, Brenda Kinnett Cutter, who he married on September 24, 1984, survive him. Brenda was his faithful caregiver this past several years, and his family is very grateful to her for her love and support. Also surviving are his son, Gregg (Sue) Cutter of Aurora; two daughters, Beth Cutter (Jason Spencer) of Brentwood, CA., and Tracy (Gil) Landwehr of Versailles; 12 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Kinnett of Dillsboro/Aurora, and Loretta Libbert of Ocala, FL.  His parents, a twin brother, one brother Howard Cutter and two sisters, Wanda Cutter and LaVerna "Shorty" McClennan, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m. at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro with Pastors Pamela Thiede and Arnold Cutter officiating. Internment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Friends may meet his family at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Dillsboro Fire Department.

Elva Delay Little

Elva Delay Little, 105, of Versailles, passed away Friday, September 14, 2012, at Ripley Crossing Health Care in Milan. She was born in Rexville on February 1, 1907 the daughter of Luther and Lizzie Lane Delay. She was married to Delbert Little on February 1, 1936 at the Ninth Street Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio and he preceded her in death on April 3, 1975.

Survivors include one son David (Joan) of Bakersfield, California; two daughters Patricia Anne (Terry) Smith of Pataskala, Ohio and Martha (Loren) Pohle of Aurora, Indiana; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Gladys Marsh and Clare Morrell, and her brother Loyd Delay.

Mrs. Little was a 1925 graduate of Versailles High School and was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, gardening and cooking. Elva was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school until she was 90 and was also a member of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 18 at 11 a.m. at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Tanglewood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the church. The Eastern Star will conduct services Monday evening at 7 at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.

George L. Rohrig

George L. Rohrig, 81, of Osgood, passed away Monday, Sept. 17, 2012 at the Manderley Health Care Center, Osgood. He was born at Norwood, Ohio on Nov. 4, 1930, the son of John T. and Mayme Fisk Rohrig.  He was married to Sharon Foster on March 22, 1963 and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2008.

Survivors include three sons, George Rohrig, Jr. and companion Margaret of Osgood, Fred (Linda) Rohrig of Pierceville, and Sammy Dean Rohrig of Lakeland, Florida; five daughters, Carolyn Sue (Jerry) Ellis of Dover, Florida, Rolena Newman and friend Ed of Huntingburg, Georgia Albury of Riverview, Florida, Sherri Higgins of Oklahoma, and Cindy Parker of Lakeland, Florida; 19 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren; three sisters Loraine Manning of Bright, Posey (Bob) Lauber of Sunman, and Millie Edmondson of Tucson, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Alberta Roy; brothers, Jim, Johnny, and Roy Rohrig; his stepmother Alma Rohrig, and his great grandson John Austin Rohrig.

Mr. Rohrig was a retired truck mechanic and had been a truck driver for Bush Trucking in Lakeland, Florida. George was a member of the Holton Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles with Rev. Bob McCreary of the Holton Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the New Marion Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 20 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Holton Christian Church or to the New Marion Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Grace Mae Wickizer

Grace Mae Wickier, 87, of Farmers Retreat, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012 at the Waters of Dillsboro. She was born June 26, 1924 in Osgood the daughter of Walter Lee Folsom and Gertrude Hendrixson Folsom.

She graduated from Napoleon High School, class of 1942 and in 1944 she enlisted in the US Navy. She met and fell in love with Robert Wickizer who was in the US Army at the time. They were married on Sept. 30, 1945 and Grace left the service to become a wife at home to Robert. Grace worked for many years as a nurse's aid at the Dillsboro Manor. She loved cooking, baking, and having her family over for dinner every Sunday after church.  She was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Farmers Retreat, and took part in many of the school and church activities at St. Johns.

Robert and Grace were blessed with three children who have given them many happy and blessed times together. Her three children who all survive are Richard Lee (Pam) Wickizer of Osgood, Roberta J. (Richard) Luke of Dillsboro and Brenda S. Thayer of Dillsboro; ten grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Wickizer passed away on Dec. 21, 2006. She was also preceded in death by son-in-law, Jim Thayer in 2002; two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral service for Grace will be Friday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat with Pastor Garry Wickert officiating. Internment will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery at Farmers Retreat. Friends may meet her family at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 5-8 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Lutheran Cemetery Fund.

Alfred Baker

Alfred Baker, 84 of Connersville, passed away on Friday September 7, 2012. Roy Barton

A memorial service for Roy Barton was held on Thursday July 26, 2012, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home in Bull Shoals, Arkansas. Military honors were by Veterans of Foreign Wars Hoevel-Barnett Post #1341 and Alley-White American Legion Post #52. Roy passed away suddenly at Baxter Regional Medical Center July 21, 2012. He was 90 years old.

Roy was born April 25, 1922, at Milan, the son of Jesse and Augusta Reinhardt Barton. He married Beverly Joy Zurek on November 15, 1975.

Roy was a depression era baby and grew up helping on the family farm while working in a furniture factory at night. He joined the Navy after some peer pressure from friends and ended up the only one to pass the physical exam. He trained at Great Lakes Naval Station and was sent for machinist training at N. Dakota State College. He was stationed at Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba before being assigned to the USS Adair and traveling through the Panama Canal to cross the Pacific. Roy said he was on a "lucky" ship missing a number of close calls and surviving a direct hit from a kamikaze plane. He mustered out of the service in 1946 and went to refrigeration school.

Roy owned his own refrigeration business and then opened a sporting goods store with his brother, Bill, before retiring to Edgewood Bay in Lakeview, AR. Roy quickly became active in the local Hoevel-Barnett Post #1341 VFW, the Retired Fisherman's Club and the Edgewood Bay Homeowner's Association and the Lakeview Community Club.

He was never one to say no or to complain and if you attended a Fish Boil or Fish Fry in Bull Shoals or Lakeview he was probably cooking.

Survivors include two daughters, Terri Borgman of Cobden, IL and Cyndi Bromir of Carbondale, IL; one son, David Zurek of Wonderlake, IL; two brothers, Estel Barton (Betty) of IN and Bill Barton of SD and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, twin brother Ray and brother, Robert.

Eva Delay

Eva Delay, 92, of Versailles, passed away Friday, September 7, 2012 at her home. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on January 18, 1920 the daughter of Edwin and Emma Felix Sparks. She was married to Loyd Delay on April 20, 1940 and he preceded her in death on November 13, 2007.

Survivors include two sons, Jim (Rita) Delay of Concord, California and Phil (Debbie) Delay of Bloomington; two daughters, Betty (Roger) Hyatt of Columbus, Ohio and Debbie (Larry) Mellin of Plymouth; daughter-in-law, Ruth Delay of Columbus; six grandchildren, Jeff (Tracy) Delay of Avon, Greg (Connie) Delay of Seymour, Erik Mellin of LaPorte, Ben Delay of Dallas, Texas, Sara Delay and Rachel Delay both of Bloomington; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Haley, Justin, and Madison Delay; also one great-great-grandson, Bradley James Delay; one brother, Fred Sparks of Holton.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son Loyd Delay, Jr., her sister Lucille BeDunnah, and her brothers Clifford, Lawrence, Robert, Gene, and Raymond Sparks.

Mrs. Delay was a 1938 graduate of Milan High School and a 72-year member of the Versailles Baptist Church where she participated in the church's prayer shawl ministry. She was also a member of the Versailles American Legion Auxiliary and the Do-A-Lot Home Economics Club.

Eva and Loyd owned and operated the Versailles Dairy Queen from 1963 to 1970.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 12 at 11 a.m. at the Versailles Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Baptist Church or the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Donald Morrison

Donald Morrison, 74, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012 at the Waters of Clifty Falls at Madison. He was born in Milan on May 24, 1938, the son of Earl and Hazel Demaree Morrison.

Survivors include two sisters, Irene Youngblood and Evelyn Jean Bush both of Madison; one brother, Larry Wayne Morrison of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Lois Wooten and Ruth Tucker.

Mr. Morrison was an Army veteran, a member of the NRA, and the Madison American Legion Post #9. Donald had been employed with Grote Manufacturing in Madison, was a former school bus driver for the South Ripley Schools, and retired from Thomas and Skinner in Osgood in 2002.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 11 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home with Dale Day of the Versailles Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery near Versailles with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #9 at Madison. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Diabetes Foundation or the Shelby Cemetery in care of the funeral home.

Edith J. Duncan Risk

Edith J. Duncan Risk, 83, of Hanover, formerly of Canaan, passed away Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Funeral services were held Saturday, September 1, at the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church near Canaan.
