Ava Louise Bailey Cutter

Ava Louise Bailey Cutter was born in Lake County, IN, on October 29, 1926 on the family farm. She attended Oakland Grade School at Belshaw, IN for grades 1 through 8, then Lowell District High School in Lowell, IN for her high school years, graduating in May, 1944. Following her high school graduation, Louise attended East Chicago Business School until February when she went to work in an oil company office in Lowell. After two years she took a position at the Lowell National Bank where she worked for two years. Louise decided to go to college to become a teacher.

She attended Illinois State Normal University, completing her BS degree in three and a half years. Her first teaching position was in Urbana, IL, where she taught for one and a half years. She then went to Frankfort, IN and taught for a year in the second grade. It was at this time a prince charming came along and changed the teaching plans.

Louise met her husband, Gilbert "Bill" Cutter when he brought his prize bull up from Dillsboro to Crown Point for the Lake County Fair. Louise had her prize calf in the pen next to his bull. The bull was eating the feed that Louise had for the calf. Louise and Bill started talking and as they say, love started at the Lake County Fair in Crown Point. Louise married Bill Cutter in June, 1954, and they moved to Dillsboro.

Louise did a lot of subbing at Dillsboro Elementary School while getting used to the new community. During this time she taught one semester in second grade in Rising Sun.

Louise and Bill had four children, Peggy-married to Dennis Mix, and Patti- married to David Smith, Ross- married to Annie, and Curt- married to Kathy. All four of her children reside in Dillsboro.

When her youngest child went to kindergarten, Louise began teaching at Lawrenceburg Central School, where she taught second grade for 23 years. She also received her Masters Degree from Xavier University. Louise retired due to her husbands failing health.

Louise has been a member of the Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association for 24 years. She was one of the founders of Great Caesars 4H Club and was a 4H leader for ten years from 1972-82. In her later years, she volunteered as a Special Education teacher at Dillsboro for many years. She was also a member of the Dearborn County Hospital Auxiliary.

Louise was a longtime member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Olean.

On Sunday morning, August 26, 2012, Louise passed away at Shady Nook Care Center. Besides her four children and their spouses, Louise leaves behind 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her husband, Bill, passed away in 2003, and she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Forrest, John and Frances.

The funeral service for Louise will be Thursday, August 30 at 11 a.m. at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Olean, with her good friend Pastor Richard Wilkey officiating. She will be laid to rest at St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery in Olean. Friends may meet her family at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro on Wednesday, August 29 from 5-8 p.m. Memorials in her name may be given to Friendship Fire Department, Olean Lutheran Cemetery, or to a charity of donor's choice.

Madge Adelia Edwards

Madge Adelia Edwards, 94, formerly of Manchester, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 23, 2012 at Englewood Manor in Englewood, Ohio. Madge was born September 29, 1917 in Dearborn County the daughter of Walter Schweers and Inez Korf Schweers.

She graduated from Aurora High School in 1936. On March 11, 1944 she married Hugh D. Edwards, and he passed away on May 28, 1995.

Madge lived in Manchester until 1987 when she moved to Tipp City, Ohio to be closer to her son and his wife. She was an active homemaker and enjoyed sewing, knitting, and making quilts. While living in Manchester, Madge was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Powell. Surviving is her son, Jim D. Edwards and his wife, Sheri of West Milton, OH; two granddaughters, Sara Byrne and Lara Kemerling; two great granddaughters, Chloe and Naiya Byrne; sister, Gail Konradi of Rushville; many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for Madge was held Monday, August 27, at Riverview Cemetery in Aurora with Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. For a more lasting memorial, donations may be given in her memory to a charity of donor's choice. Arrangements were entrusted to DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Anna June English

Anna June English, 86, of McCordsville, passed away Monday, August 20, 2012. Services were held Saturday, Aug. 25 at Hendryx Mortuary Cumberland Chapel in Indianapolis.

Scott W. Graves

Scott W. Graves, 49, of Versailles, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 at his home. He was born at Greensburg on May 20, 1963, the son of Marvin and Ruth McIntosh Graves.

Survivors include two brothers Dale Graves of Erlanger, Kentucky and Keith (Ann) Graves of Delaware; three sisters Cynthia (Kenny) Beeman of Holton, Sherry Denton of Newberry, and Robin Beeman of Nebraska, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Graves was a 1981 graduate of South Ripley High School and served in the Navy from 1984 to 1988. Scott worked as a machine operator for NVIS in North Vernon.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 28 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. David Shivers of the Hopewell Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Memorial Garden near Madison. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Ripley County Humane Society in care of the funeral home.

Samuel Lee Mills

Samuel Lee Mills, 82, of Taylor Road passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Four Season Health and Rehab Center surrounded by his family and friends.

He attended God's Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio and completed the Christian Workers Course in May of 1953.

He was previously employed at Hamilton Cosco for 13 years. He ministered at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Hillsboro, Ohio from 1953-1956, Walker Chapel, Rosstown, IN from 1956-1964, Holton Wesleyan, Holton from 1964-1977, Bethel Wesleyan from 1977-1980, and the Ohio Street Wesleyan Church, Columbus, IN from 1980-1997.

He was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Wesleyan Church in Bloomington, IN and served as a Chaplain at the Columbus Regional Hospital for many years during his ministry.

Samuel was born August 2, 1930, in Crawford County the son of Everett Edward and Dimple McCutcheon Mills.  He married Virginia Lorraine Vandemark on August 2, 1952 in Deford, Michigan and she preceded Samuel in death on February 12, 1997. He married Peggy McQueen of Bloomington on May 23, 1998 and she survives.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike with the Revs. Gordon Tilley, Jason Baker and Paul Mills officiating.

Family and friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and 9:00 a.m. to time of service.

Graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 on Wednesday at the Old Union Chapel Cemetery in Grantsburg, IN.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years Virginia, his parents, brother, David Mills and sister, Hilda Tilley.

Paul Edward Steuver

Paul Edward Steuver was born on April 3, 1933 at his parents' home in Dillsboro. He was the son of Jennie Laura Libbert and Hubert Edward Steuver. He married Janet Fae Green of Versailles on November 22, 1956. Paul entered his Lord's arms on August 21, 2012 at Casa Grande, Arizona, and will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Janet Fae (Green), his son Paul Edward Steuver, Jr., and wife Renee, of Bonita Springs, Florida; his son Mark David Steuver, and wife Shutong, of Casa Grande, Arizona; his daughter Selena Faye Lucas, and husband Jim, of Bonita Springs, Florida; and Lora Lee Hammond, and husband John, of Salem, Indiana; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

He enjoyed riding his bicycle daily, spending his summers in Indiana, gardening, traveling, photography, helping others and spending time with his family.

Paul earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education at Hanover College, Hanover, Indiana and earned his Master's Degree at Indiana University. An Air Force Veteran of the Korean War, he taught math at Casa Grande Union High School for many years. He was a member of the Casa Grande United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post #8.

Herbert Eckstein

Herbert Eckstein, 81, of Sunman, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 at his home. He was born on December 20, 1930 in Batesville, the son of Anthony and Cora (Meierle) Eckstein.

Herbert married Marceda Lambert on June 30, 1956 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Sunman. He served his country proudly as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force and was a lifelong farm machinery mechanic. Herbert loved to fish in his spare time and was a member of the Men's Sodality at St. Nicholas Church and the Sunman American Legion.

Marceda Eckstein, Herbert's wife of 56 years, survives. Also surviving are sons Kevin (Debbie) Eckstein, of Cincinnati, OH; Philip (Rebecca) Eckstein of Sunman; daughter Donna (Steve) Delap of Milan; and sons Nick (Tina) Eckstein of Osgood and Larry (Mary) Eckstein of Osgood; six grandchildren, Adam and Justin Eckstein, Amber and Sara Eckstein, Stefanie Crawford and Randi Delap. Brothers surviving include Leonard Eckstein and Mark Eckstein, both of Batesville. 

Besides his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by brothers; Robert (Happy) Eckstein, Paul Eckstein, George Eckstein and sisters; Francie Kohlman, Helen Melvin, and Leona Sarringhaus.

Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, August 21 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Sunman, with service officiated by Father Frank Eckstein. Mary M. Ginder, 85 of Greensburg, wife of the late Lester L. Ginder, passed away Friday, August 17, 2012 at the Ross Manor in Dillsboro. Mary was born in Madison County, Indiana (near Lapel). She was a graduate of the Lapel High School and also a 50-year member of the Lapel O.E.S. (Order of Eastern Star). She was also affiliated with the Blue Mt. Assembly of God.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary O. (Edwin) Denlinger of Greensburg, and Vivian A. Ginder of Shippensburg, Pennsylvania; one son Mark E. (Pamela) Ginder of Dillsboro; one sister Genevieve Lesher of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania; one brother Willis Skiles of Noblesville; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Preceding her in death were her parents Joseph and Elma Skiles, her husband Lester, two sisters Mildred Filbrun and Dorothy Flora, and her brother Joseph Skiles II.

Mary Hall, 63, of Henryville, died August 15, 2012, at her home. She was the daughter of Ed and Virginia Wagner. She married Howard Hall and he preceded her in death.

Viola Laverne (Dowers) Kelso

Viola Laverne (Dowers) Kelso, 81, of Dillsboro passed away Thursday, August 16, 2012 at her residence. Viola was born August 25, 1930, the daughter of Elbert and Inez (Baldwin) Dowers. She married Douglas Kelso March 28, 1953 and he preceded her in death January 2, 1987.

Viola worked as a sales clerk for Alco in Versailles. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling, cooking and spending time with her family and friends.

Viola is survived by sons: David Dean (Connie) Kelso of Boca Raton, FL, James Allen (Mary) Kelso of Middleburg, FL; Michael Lee Kelso of Milan; daughters: Kathleen Ann (Bo) Peters of Middleburg FL; Shelley Renee Kelso of Milan; brother: Glen (Harriett) Dowers of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren: David, Lorna, Tina, Douglas Kelso, Kelly Boyd, Beth Rogers, Joshua and Natosha John, Cruiz Baker and seven great grandchildren; and longtime best friends Terri (Charles) Douglas and Susan Mercer. She is preceeded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

James Franklin Corbin

James Franklin Corbin, 80, of Greensburg, formerly of New Point, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012. Donna Faye Holt

Donna Faye Holt, 69, of Holton, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at her home. She was born on September 25, 1941, the daughter of Clarence and Margaret Margason Mickel. She married Ernest Holt Sr. on February 12, 1960 in Shelby County. He preceded her in death on January 11, 2010.

Donna was a homemaker. She was a member of the North Vernon Wesleyan Church, the Missionary Society, and Purdue Alumni. Her hobbies included reading, watching Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with family.

Survivors include five sons: Anthony (Connie) Holt Sr. of Franklin, Mike, Ernest Jr. and Robert Holt all of Versailles, and John (Carol) Holt of Napoleon; two daughters: Beth (Paul) Rumsey of Holton, and Starla (Randy) Sell of Red Hill, Pennsylvania; one sister: Janet Worstall of Indianapolis; 12 grandchildren: Anthony Jr., Kaloni, and Sierra Holt of Ohio, Malia Adams of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, Angela and Liz Copeland of Versailles, William and Patrick Rumsey of Holton, Tyler and Amanda Holt of Franklin, and Matthew Holt of Napoleon; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ernest Holt Sr., and one sister, Linda Bell.

Rita Joan Lykins

Rita Joan Lykins age 49, of Sunman, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012 at her home. She was born June 22, 1963 in Greenville, Ohio, the daughter of Carl Emerson & Maxine Marie Jordan Wright.  She married David C. Lykins on October 2, 2010 and he survives at home.

Other survivors include: mother: Maxine Jordan; sons: Jeffrey Fourman and Adrian White; daughter: Rachel White; brothers: Kenneth, Bud and Darrell Wright; sisters: Rebecca Sleppy, Rose Wright, Reba Pitsenbarger and Renee Hubler. She was preceded in death by one brother, Keith Wright.

Margaret E. Maxwell

Margaret E. Maxwell, 97, of Greensburg, passed away Monday, August 13, 2012 in Greensburg. She was born in Covington, KY, on May 9, 1915, the daughter of James and Martha Huffman Culbertson. She was married to George Maxwell on March 29, 1944 and he preceded her in death on January 30, 1981.

Survivors include one son, Richard Maxwell of Greensburg; two daughters, Martha Jane (Jon. K.) Hanley of South Bend and Melanie Maxwell of Greensburg; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Nikkie Knecht, sister Anna Mae Waldo, and brother Robert Culbertson.

Mrs. Maxwell was a 1934 graduate of Versailles High School. She was a homemaker and worked as a seamstress at Minears in Greensburg. She was a member of the Greensburg United Methodist Church and the Evening Bells Home Economics Club in Greensburg. As a hobby, Margaret had crocheted over 350 hats for newborn babies in the Decatur Memorial Hospital in Greensburg.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 16, at 2 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles, with Rev. Susan Bunting of the Greensburg United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Benham Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 12 p.m. until time of services. Marjorie Renfro

Marjorie Renfro, 94, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts on July 1, 1918, the daughter of Charles and Nellie DeBlois Whalen. She was married to Daily Renfro in 1986 and he preceded her in death on December 9, 1999.

Survivors include her step children: Zelpha Otte of Columbus, Rosella Trobaugh of Versailles, and Everett Renfro and David Renfro both of Holton; and one sister: Eleanor Cook of Wellesley, Massachusetts.

Mrs. Renfro was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 15 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with burial in the Holton Cemetery. Edna F. (Grossman) Taffe

Edna F. (Grossman) Taffe, 88, of Milan, passed away Monday, August 13, 2012 at Margaret Mary Community Hospital in Batesville. Edna was born May 30, 1924 near Sunman, the daughter of Walter and Anna L. (Ludeker) Grossman. She married Luther E. Taffe on November 14, 1942, and he preceded her in death on February 22, 2007.

Edna was a homemaker and a former employee of Ed Kennedy Garage in Milan. She enjoyed the outdoors, flowers, gardening and collected rocks and roosters. She also enjoyed talking to her friends and neighbors. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Ladies Aid.

Edna is survived by a son, Leslie L (Carol) Taffe of Greenfield; two grandchildren, Cheri (Clint) Furgason of Noblesville and Brian Taffe of Greenfield and two great grandchildren, Connor Furgason and Kyla Taffe.

Aaron J. Westmeier, 91, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012 at his home. He was born near Versailles on March 23, 1921, the son of George and Lillie Weakman Westmeier. He was married to Geneva Kieffer on July 12, 1947 and she preceded him in death on June 17, 2006.

Survivors include one son, Bill (Mary) Westmeier of Versailles; two daughters, Linda (Terry) Hillman of Connersville and Pat (Paul) Reese of Milan; eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brother Willard and his granddaughter Clarissa Westmeier.

Mr. Westmeier was a 1940 graduate of Versailles High School. He was an Army veteran of WWII where he served in the Rhineland and Central Europe as a radioman. For his service he received the WWII Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with two bronze stars, three overseas service bars, and the Good Conduct medal.

Mr. Westmeier retired from Cummins in 1986 after 19 years and was also a farmer. Aaron was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Olean, the Versailles American Legion, and the Ripley County Farm Bureau.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Ken Witt officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and from 10 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.

Albert T. Gordon

Albert T. Gordon, 79, a lifelong resident of Dillsboro, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Waters of Dillsboro, Ross Manor. Albert was born in Dillsboro on April 7, 1933, the son of Tom Gordon and Tena (Schmaltz) Gordon.

Albert served his country in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. On August 30, 1958 he was united in marriage to Rosalie Scott, who survives.

Albert was employed at the George E. Detzel Co. and Fenton Rigging Company as a heavy equipment operator for over 40 years, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. When he retired, Albert enjoyed his home and family, and being with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his animals, driving his workhorse, mowing his large yard, and feeding the birds and squirrels.

When Albert was able he attended Hopewell Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Suzann Gordon, and his sister, Dolly Holland. He is survived by his loving wife, Rosalie (Scott) Gordon; three sons, Scott Gordon of Dillsboro, Andy (Temple) Gordon of Batesville, and Jack (Kathy) Gordon of Carmel; six loving grandchildren, Jon and Megan of Florida, Christine, Alexandra and Cassidy of Carmel, and Savannah of Batesville; two brothers, Jerry and Tommy and one sister, Betty Grace, all of Dillsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Albert will be Tuesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro, with Pastor Tom Fehrman and Pastor Jann Heseman officiating. Burial will be in the Oakdale Cemetery with military grave rites to follow. Memorials may be given to the Hopewell Presbyterian Church or to Dillsboro United Methodist Church. DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro, is in charged of arrangements.

Helen Short, 81 of Manchester, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012. Funeral services were held Monday, August 6, at Cook Funeral Home, Sunman, with burial in St. Paul Cemetery, Sunman. Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Cancer Society. Cook Funeral Home, Sunman, was in charge of arrangements.
